The world of *Demon Slayer* is filled with terrifying demons who possess incredible powers, but the story’s true heart lies in the tragic histories of the humans who fight them. Each member of the Demon Slayer Corps, and even many of the demons themselves, is haunted by devastating loss and pain. These experiences drive their determination and shape who they are, influencing their abilities and sense of right and wrong. They transform personal suffering into the strength needed to protect others. The story isn’t simply about fighting demons; it’s a deeply emotional exploration of trauma, the search for justice, and finding meaning in a cruel world.
The characters’ pain is always felt, adding depth to their struggles and making their triumphs truly resonate.
Warning: this article contains massive spoilers for Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and the manga.
10) Tanjiro & Nezuko Kamado
The Kamado family lived a simple, peaceful life selling charcoal, but their world was destroyed when Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King, attacked. Everyone appeared to be killed except for Tanjiro, who had been away the night before. When Tanjiro returned home the next morning, he found his family brutally murdered, with only his younger sister, Nezuko, still alive. Unbeknownst to him, Nezuko had been turned into a demon. This terrible tragedy changed Tanjiro’s life forever, compelling him to embark on a difficult and heartbreaking journey to find a way to restore Nezuko’s humanity and avenge his family.
At the heart of *Demon Slayer* lies the tragic bond between Tanjiro and Nezuko. Tanjiro’s deep love and relentless protection of his sister, even after she becomes a demon, combined with Nezuko’s fight against other demons alongside him, drive the entire story. While devastated by loss, Tanjiro shows incredible compassion, and his love for Nezuko fuels his determination to help all those harmed by demons.
9) Obanai Iguro
Obanai had a horrific childhood. He was born into a secluded, ruthless group that offered sacrifices to a snake demon in exchange for riches. Though considered special as the first boy born into the clan in generations, he was imprisoned and constantly tormented. Every night, the snake demon terrorized him, filling his young life with fear. The demon even demanded Obanai’s mouth be cut open to resemble a serpent’s. His only companion was a small white snake named Kaburamaru, who stayed by his side for life. Realizing the demon intended to eventually devour him, Obanai managed to escape, but the demon chased him. Fortunately, he was rescued by Shinjuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira (Kyojuro Rengoku’s father), who sensed the danger and destroyed the demon.
Obanai constantly felt ashamed of the scars on his face, covering them with bandages as a reminder of the torture he endured. He dedicated himself completely to his work as a Hashira, believing that killing demons would somehow erase the painful history of his family and his own trauma. His unwavering dedication to the Demon Slayer Corps and his affection for Mitsuri were the only sources of stability in a life overshadowed by a dark past.
8) Sanemi & Genya Shinazugawa
Genya and Sanemi (the Wind Hashira) grew up in a large family with seven siblings. Their father was a cruel alcoholic who left them, and their mother worked incredibly hard to support them all. Tragedy struck when their mother was turned into a demon and attacked her children. Sanemi was forced to fight and ultimately kill the demon – his own mother – to protect his remaining brother, Genya. When Sanemi returned home, he found only Genya had survived, but the young boy, deeply traumatized and surrounded by the bodies of his siblings, mistakenly believed Sanemi had murdered them and rejected him.
A deep misunderstanding permanently damaged the relationship between the two brothers, creating a painful distance that neither—particularly Sanemi—tried to fix. Sanemi threw himself into demon slaying, becoming hardened and pushing Genya away, believing he was protecting him from the dangers of that life. Genya, desperate for his brother’s acceptance after a childhood mistake, followed the same path, even though he couldn’t master any breathing techniques. Despite this difficulty, Genya refused to give up, finding unique ways to fight demons, like his ability to consume their flesh and temporarily gain their powers. Their relationship remained strained and distant, filled with unspoken affection, deep regret, and ultimately ended in tragedy during the final battle against Muzan.
7) Kanao Tsuyuri
Kanao experienced a deeply traumatic childhood marked by extreme poverty and horrific abuse. This led to a severe emotional breakdown at a very young age, leaving her unable to speak or make her own decisions. She was essentially left numb and broken. Eventually, she was sold into slavery, where she continued to suffer, treated like an animal – bound, dragged around, and denied basic care like bathing or clean clothes. She was left in a state of complete emotional emptiness.
Kanae and Shinobu Kocho rescued her from a terrible life and took her in as their adopted daughter. Shinobu worried that Kanae’s decision to adopt her was unwise, as the girl was deeply traumatized and struggled to even move. Kanae comforted both her sister and the girl, giving her a coin to help her learn how to make choices. Her past is a stark reminder of how damaging severe neglect can be, and how hard it is to heal and regain control of one’s life.
6) Giyuu Tomioka
Giyuu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, experienced a devastating loss as a child when his older sister, Tsutako, died protecting him from a demon just before her wedding. He was left with intense guilt, feeling she’d given up her own happiness to save his life. Afterwards, he was taken in and trained by Sakonji Urokodaki, a retired Water Hashira, alongside another orphaned boy named Sabito, who was Giyuu’s age. During the final test to become Demon Slayers, Sabito, whom Giyuu considered more skilled and deserving of the Water Hashira title, sacrificed himself to protect Giyuu and the other trainees.
The deaths of his sister and Sabito left Giyuu with overwhelming guilt. This is shown in his uniquely designed haori, which he created using pieces of both their garments. Even after becoming Urokodaki’s successor, Giyuu struggled with self-doubt, feeling unworthy of his position as a Demon Slayer and Hashira, believing Sabito should have had the honor instead and hoping Tanjiro would eventually take his place. Giyuu’s sadness and tendency to isolate himself stem from the sacrifices made for his survival. He believes keeping his distance protects him from the pain of losing those he loved.
5) Gyomei Himejima
Gyomei Himejima, known as the Stone Hashira, is the largest and likely most powerful member of the Demon Slayer Corps. Despite his imposing strength, he’s a kind and compassionate person who once cared for nine orphaned children at a temple. His peaceful life was tragically destroyed when one child disobeyed a rule and accidentally put the others at risk by extinguishing the protective wisteria. A demon invaded the temple, resulting in a horrific attack. Gyomei fought tirelessly throughout the night, finally defeating the demon when the sun rose, but he was the only survivor besides one young girl.
After a terrifying night filled with trauma and fear, the only surviving girl mistakenly blamed Gyomei for the horrific murders committed by a demon. Gyomei was wrongly imprisoned, but Kagaya Ubuyashiki later recognized his innocence and took him in to train as a demon slayer. That single, tragic night – and the loss of his family – ultimately revealed the depth of Gyomei’s physical and emotional power.
4) Muichiro Tokito
Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira, grew up with his twin brother, Yuichiro, after they were orphaned. They lived alone, relying on each other to survive, with Yuichiro taking the lead in teaching Muichiro how to fend for himself. Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, and his wife, Amane, often visited the brothers, eventually inviting them to live with their family. Tragically, before they could accept, a demon attacked. Yuichiro sacrificed himself to protect Muichiro, leaving his brother severely wounded and heartbroken.
After the attack, Amane discovered the twins and saved Muichiro, who quickly became an incredibly skilled swordsman. He became a Hashira in just two months at the age of fourteen – a remarkable achievement that usually takes Demon Slayers years. The tragedy of losing his twin brother and almost dying himself caused Muichiro to lose all his memories, leading him to become distant and emotionless. He forgot everything – his family, his past, even who he was – as his mind tried to protect him from overwhelming grief. Thankfully, during the Swordsmith Village arc, Tanjiro helped Muichiro regain his memories, restoring him to the person he once was before the attack.
3) Tengen Uzui
Tengen Uzui, also known as the Sound Hashira, had a harsh upbringing. His father, a demanding shinobi, subjected Tengen and his brothers to cruel and relentless training, aiming to strip them of emotion and forge them into ruthless fighters. The training involved blindfolded battles to the death, pushing the brothers to their limits. Tragically, Tengen unknowingly killed two of his siblings. Out of nine brothers, only Tengen and one younger brother made it through the brutal training, leaving Tengen deeply burdened with guilt and fundamentally changing his outlook on life.
Tengen left his clan and his cruel father behind, choosing instead to join the Demon Slayer Corps with his three wives. He developed a love for extravagance as a way to embrace life, stemming from a difficult childhood marked by violence and loss. In contrast to his father’s harsh lessons, Tengen always encouraged his wives to put their own well-being first and prioritized their happiness, demonstrating his deep respect for those he cared about.
2) Yoriichi Tsugikuni
Yoriichi was born as a twin, which was seen as bad luck at the time. His father initially wanted to kill him, but his mother persuaded him to let Yoriichi live, with the plan to send him to a temple when he turned twelve. This meant Yoriichi grew up separated from his parents and twin brother, Michikatsu, who was favored by their father. Yoriichi quickly showed incredible skill in sword fighting, naturally possessing a rare technique and a mark of a demon slayer. He soon surpassed Michikatsu in ability, causing his brother to become deeply jealous. When Yoriichi turned twelve, he left home as planned, but it was actually Michikatsu who his father intended to send away, recognizing Yoriichi’s exceptional talent.
For years, he searched for happiness and finally found it with his wife, Uta, and their baby. Sadly, a demon brutally killed them while he was away. Devastated by this loss, he dedicated his life to becoming a Demon Slayer, creating the original Sun Breathing technique from which all others evolved. His twin brother, Michikatsu, joined him at first, but eventually abandoned their mission, seeking greater power and ultimately becoming the powerful Upper Rank 1 demon, Kokushibo. Despite his efforts, Yoriichi couldn’t save his brother or defeat Muzan Kibutsuji, leaving him isolated and forever searching for a peace he could never find.
1) Shinobu Kocho
When Shinobu and her sister Kanae were young, they tragically saw their parents killed by demons. This experience led both of them to become Demon Slayers. Kanae became a powerful leader, known as the Flower Hashira, and always tried to stay positive and cheer up Shinobu. Shinobu was devastated when Kanae was killed by a powerful demon named Doma. Filled with sadness and a desire for revenge, Shinobu kept the gentle smile her sister loved, but hid a deep and dangerous anger inside.
I witnessed Shinobu completely change after Kanae died. All she wanted was to eliminate Doma. But she wasn’t strong enough to defeat him in a direct fight, so she came up with an incredibly risky plan. Over years, she slowly poisoned herself, building up a lethal toxin within her body. She knew facing Doma would be a losing battle, that he’d ultimately absorb her, but she accepted that. Her sacrifice wasn’t about winning a fight; it was about becoming a poison that would kill him from the inside, finally avenging her sister and fulfilling her purpose, even if it meant giving up her own life.
