Microsoft is working on a fix for a Windows 11 issue where the “update and shut down” option wasn’t actually turning off computers. The company is testing the solution in recent preview versions of Windows 11, addressing a problem users have been experiencing for a while.
Some Windows 11 users have noticed that choosing the “update and shut down” option doesn’t always work as expected. Instead of fully turning off, the computer installs the update and then restarts, bringing you back to the login or desktop screen.
For over two years, many Windows 11 users have struggled with the update and shutdown process – it often failed to work as expected, though not for everyone consistently. Microsoft hasn’t previously explained the cause of this unreliability, but they’ve now announced a fix is being implemented.

A solution to this issue is now available in the newest preview versions of Windows 11 (Dev and Beta Channels). It’s expected to be released to all Windows 11 users over the next few weeks. Here’s what the official update notes say about the fix:
We resolved a problem that sometimes prevented your PC from fully shutting down after you selected “Update and shutdown.”
The ability to update and shut down is useful when Windows has an update waiting and you’re finished using your computer for the day. It’s frustrating to have to wait for an update to finish installing and restarting before you can simply shut down and walk away.
I noticed that the update and shutdown feature was supposed to save people time, but it often didn’t actually shut down the computer completely. Because of this, many users still had to wait and manually shut it down themselves. Hopefully, this new fix will finally resolve that issue and make the process reliable!
