Jenna Bush Hager Reacts to Being the Subject of Daughter Homework

Jenna Bush Hager is hoping her daughter focuses on love.

Savannah Guthrie, the host of *Today*, shared a story about a recent school assignment her daughter, Mila, brought home. Twelve-year-old Mila was asked to write about her aspirations and what she wants for the future.

She wrote with such depth and emotion, it brought tears to my eyes, I shared in my October 6th newsletter, Voices at the Table.

Among the things Mila wanted?

In a school assignment, Jenna’s oldest child wrote that they wished for a peaceful world where frightening things weren’t real. They also expressed a desire to meet their mother when she was the same age as they are now, as shared in a photo by Jenna.

The young girl also expressed a wish to discover seagrass in completely new colors, to be able to fall asleep whenever she felt tired, and to lie on hot sand without getting burned.

After talking with Mila, Jenna—a mom to Poppy, 10, and Hal, 6—started thinking about her own childhood. She wondered if she’d been as concerned about world problems as Mila is at age 12.

Oh, my sweet girl… it just breaks my heart that she comes home from school already burdened with all the awful things happening. My Jenna’s been trying to figure out the best way to protect her, you know? She wants to help her daughter navigate everything without getting overwhelmed by all the scary stuff she hears at school. It’s so sweet how much she cares!

The TV host said it took her a full day to decide how to support her daughter, ultimately advising her to prioritize love.

I told her I think love is the best way to overcome fear, and that sharing joy with loved ones helps us face whatever makes us afraid.

Jenna shared that, thinking about how love is the opposite of fear and light overcomes darkness, she often asks herself and her children where they experience feelings of love.

She finds the deepest connection – whether it’s in nature or, especially, when she’s with her kids.

She explained that she often finds the greatest peace and happiness in her children. Simply reading their schoolwork, holding them close at night, and listening to their sweet and imaginative thoughts reminds her that there’s still so much beauty and hope in the world.
