A recent report indicates Nintendo is developing two Mario movies. While they’ve just given us a first look at the upcoming sequel, *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*, it seems Nintendo also has another film project set in the Mushroom Kingdom in the works.
Sources say Nintendo and Universal are developing a *Donkey Kong* movie, likely set in the same world as *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*.
“The Donkey Kong movie is already in active work at Universal.”
Seth Rogen voiced Donkey Kong in the first *Super Mario Bros. Movie*, but he wasn’t mentioned when the cast for the 2026 sequel was announced. This might mean that Donkey Kong will have a more significant role in a future film project.
In July, a copyright filing for a movie called “Untitled Donkey Kong Motion Picture” was found, registered to both Nintendo and Universal. This discovery supports earlier reports by Richtman about a Donkey Kong movie being in development.
This news follows a rumor that started over four years ago with Nintendo insider Zippo, who predicted that Donkey Kong would get his own movie.
Besides *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, Nintendo is also making a live-action *Legend of Zelda* film with Sony Pictures, directed by Wes Ball, who also directed *Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes*. However, this project appears to be completely independent from their work with Universal and Illumination Entertainment on animated films.
While there hasn’t been an official announcement about a *Donkey Kong* movie, one might be coming in the future. Nintendo’s next film will be *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*, set to release on April 2, 2026. This animated sequel follows Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) as he explores space and meets new characters from the Nintendo universe.
How Likely Is a Donkey Kong Movie
For a while now, people have been discussing the possibility of more movies based in the world of *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*. Ideas have included spin-offs focusing on characters like Donkey Kong and Luigi.
The world of Donkey Kong feels perfect for a movie. Besides the main setting of the Mushroom Kingdom, the Kong Kingdom was one of the few places from Nintendo games featured in the first *Super Mario Bros. Movie*.
With *The Super Mario Movie* earning over $1 billion worldwide and Donkey Kong being a popular attraction at Universal’s Nintendo-themed areas, it seems likely a *Donkey Kong* movie will happen eventually.
The game could delve into the history of the entire Kong family, featuring characters like Diddy, Dixie, and Lanky Kong more prominently than ever before – beyond their brief, non-speaking appearances in *The Super Mario Movie*.
I really hope this movie doesn’t just tell a new story, but also celebrates everything that makes Donkey Kong, well, Donkey Kong! Imagine a soundtrack packed with those classic tunes that immediately transport you back to playing the games, and seeing some of the iconic baddies – like the awesome King K. Rool – make an appearance. It would be a fantastic nod to the character’s history at Nintendo and everything fans love about the franchise.
