Boots cast share their hopes for potential season 2 following that surprise cliffhanger

*Warning: Boots spoilers ahead.*

Marine Corps training is notoriously difficult. Now picture a young man, keeping his sexuality a secret, joining in the early 1990s.

Boots is a new drama on Netflix, based on the true story told in Greg Cope White’s memoir, The Pink Marine.

Miles Heizer, known for his role in ’13 Reasons Why’, stars in the film, and Liam Oh plays Ray McAffey, Cameron’s close friend.

They struggle to prove themselves and earn their place in the Marines, battling both physical and emotional challenges. Leading these challenges is Sergeant Sullivan (Max Parker), a highly decorated Marine with a hidden past.

Boots ending explained

After watching all eight episodes of the first season, I finally feel like Cameron has truly earned his place. It was really satisfying to see even Sullivan acknowledge his progress – it turns out all that tough love was actually about wanting to push him to be his best. And honestly, I think Sullivan’s own struggles with being open about who he is definitely played a part in how he treated Cameron, too.

“You ready, Cope? You’re a Marine now.” Sullivan said, then walked away. We don’t know where he went, but it’s clear why he left when he did. He was facing jail time after a bar fight, and the Marines were also investigating his sexual orientation – being gay was illegal and prohibited enlistment at the time.

Cameron was celebrating the completion of his Marine training with his fellow recruits at a bar, relieved they’d all finished. However, their celebration was cut short when a news report announced Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, signaling they would soon be deployed to fight.

Parker explained that the show has many possible futures for its characters. He particularly enjoys the scene where he gives Cameron the walkie-talkie, signaling Cameron is prepared to take on the challenges ahead. It’s a powerful moment highlighting the characters’ internal struggle between doing what’s right and what’s wrong.

Heizer hopes Cameron finds love, especially since his romantic life wasn’t very successful in the first season.

He added that it would be fascinating to watch him deal with that situation, particularly within a military setting. He thought it would be great, but acknowledged there were many possibilities for the story, and lots of things he’d enjoy seeing. Personally, he’d love to see a bit of romance added to the mix.

Ray’s future is uncertain, and he’s at a turning point. He’s starting to really think about the life he’s led, something he hasn’t done since childhood. It would be good to see him continue to examine the decisions he’s made – or hasn’t made – and how his father and his strong sense of duty have influenced his path.

“I want him to really find out what he believes for himself.”

There’s still a lot of potential for compelling stories after that dramatic ending, especially now that the focus is shifting from training to actual combat. Cameron already faced challenges being gay in boot camp, but things will be even harder for him when he has to stay true to who he is while serving in Kuwait.

Hopefully, Netflix will renew the show for a second season so we can find out what happens next.
