So far this year, the highest-grossing movie in U.S. theaters is *A Minecraft Movie*, earning $423.9 million domestically. It’s only slightly ahead of the second-highest movie, *Lilo & Stitch*, which made $423.7 million in the U.S. Globally, *Minecraft* is the third-highest grossing film of 2025, following the Chinese animated movie *Ne Zha 2* and *Lilo & Stitch*.
So: Sequel. (Duh.)
Okay, so I just saw the news – Warner Bros. is actually making another *Minecraft* movie! It’s so exciting! Right now, all they’ve shared is a cool poster and the release date: July 23, 2027. That’s a long way off, but I’m already hyped to see what they come up with!

Warner Bros. hasn’t announced who will be involved in the next *Minecraft* movie. The first film, based on the popular video game, was directed by Jared Hess and featured Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Danielle Brooks. While critics weren’t overly impressed, the movie was a big success in theaters this spring, boosted by a viral trend on social media where young fans screamed, clapped, and repeated lines from the film.
The movie centers around a group of everyday people who stumble into the blocky universe of *Minecraft* and must join forces with Steve to find a way back to their own world.
Okay, so this is wild. Apparently, the first screenings of the *Minecraft* movie were so energetic – let’s just say things got a little out of hand and the police actually had to intervene! It was such a strange moment that Warner Bros. ended up leaning into it. They started holding special screenings where they *wanted* people to yell and react throughout the movie. Honestly, who saw that coming?
Okay, so I just heard the sequel to the *Minecraft* movie is officially slated for July 23rd, 2027! They haven’t settled on a title yet, but honestly, after seeing all those crazy viral clips, *Minecraft 2: Chicken Jockey’s Revenge* feels *right*. Though, a little part of me thinks *I … Am Steve: Another Minecraft Movie* would be a pretty fun, self-aware title too.
The Best Summer Movies of 2025
10. Kpop Demon Hunters
This movie has a brilliantly fun idea: a K-pop girl group secretly fights demons, and their biggest challenge yet comes in the form of a demonic boy band! *Kpop Demon Hunters* is visually vibrant, features surprisingly addictive songs, and is just plain enjoyable. My daughters are completely hooked, constantly asking how they can become demon-hunting K-pop stars. Honestly, after watching this, I kind of want to do that too!
9. The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Marvel’s new Fantastic Four movie, *First Steps*, is a significant upgrade from the previous four attempts by Roger Corman and 20th Century Fox. Honestly, it couldn’t have been worse – those earlier films ranged from just okay to truly bad. *First Steps* stands out with beautiful sets and a compelling villain, Galactus, a powerful being who wants to devour Earth simply because he’s lonely and hungry. While the Fantastic Four themselves aren’t particularly impressive, the movie is a promising start for the team as they join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
8. Elio
Pixar’s newest film tells the charming story of an orphaned boy, Yonas Kibreab, who discovers a sense of belonging with a group of aliens. He’s accidentally thought to be Earth’s ambassador and quickly gets caught up in a high-stakes negotiation with a powerful galactic conqueror, voiced by Brad Garrett. While the movie’s themes of fatherhood and self-discovery might resonate more with adults, it’s ultimately a heartwarming tale. A highlight is Elio’s alien friend, Glordon (Remy Edgerly), who is arguably the cutest and best sidekick in any summer movie.
7. Ballerina
To put it simply, the first *John Wick* spinoff, *Ballerina*, exceeded all expectations. Considering the long development process, extensive post-production, and rumors of reshoots, I wasn’t expecting much. The first half of the movie felt slow and serious, just as I’d anticipated. However, around the one-hour mark, the film completely changes gears. The rest of *Ballerina* is incredibly fun, featuring at least three action sequences that are as thrilling, inventive, and darkly funny as anything in the four *John Wick* films. What’s more, *Ballerina* feels like a genuine extension of the *John Wick* universe, expanding the world and even including a brief but important appearance by Keanu Reeves as John Wick himself.
6. F1
Whenever someone calls a movie “old fashioned,” it usually isn’t a good thing. It implies the film feels dated or slow. But honestly, Joseph Kosinski’s *F1* is old fashioned in all the right ways! It reminds me of those classic, big-budget blockbusters from the ’80s and ’90s – movies that were all about amazing visuals and charismatic stars like Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon, and Javier Bardem, instead of relying on existing franchises. And while it’s not perfect, *F1* is definitely not slow! The story is a bit predictable, yeah, but isn’t a little formulaic structure perfect for a movie about Formula One racing?
5. Highest 2 Lowest
As a film buff, I was really excited to see Spike Lee and Denzel Washington team up again after so many years. Their new film, *Highest 2 Lowest*, is a modern take on Akira Kurosawa’s *High and Low*, and it really makes you think about life and what matters. The story centers around a music executive (Washington) who faces an impossible choice when his employee’s son is mistakenly kidnapped – the ransom is huge, and paying it could ruin him. It’s a gripping thriller, and honestly, the subway chase scene is up there with the one in *The French Connection* – seriously thrilling! Plus, the scenes between Washington and A$AP Rocky are electric. It truly feels like a classic being made by two of the greats who are still at the top of their game.
4. 28 Years Later
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the team behind the groundbreaking zombie film *28 Days Later*, return to the genre with *28 Years Later*. This isn’t just a simple, money-making sequel, though. While it delivers the expected gore and exciting, creatively-shot action, the new film is also surprisingly deep and thought-provoking. In fact, it’s quite bleak, ending in a way that’s intentionally unsettling – not to set up another movie, but to reflect the often-disappointing reality of life.
3. Weapons
Let me tell you, if Zach Cregger asks you down to his basement, just turn and walk the other way! He clearly has a thing for creepy spaces, and his new movie, *Weapons*, is no exception. It’s a fantastic follow-up to *Barbarian*, and it’s set in the suburbs of Pennsylvania where things get really strange when an entire class of kids suddenly goes missing. The movie follows a bunch of different people – the teacher, Julia Garner, a dad played by Josh Brolin, and even an alcoholic cop, Alden Ehrenreich – as they try to figure out what happened. It jumps between their stories, and honestly, it’s a really unique blend of terrifying and funny. It’s like a horror movie version of *Pulp Fiction* – seriously, it’s exactly the kind of darkly comedic thriller we didn’t even know we wanted.
2. Superman
Comparing any DC film to Richard Donner’s *Superman* is considered sacrilege by many. However, James Gunn’s *Superman* actually surpasses it with a fantastic Lex Luthor – brilliantly played by a self-centered and sensitive Nicholas Hoult – and a wonderful supporting cast. Standouts include Edi Gathegi as the aptly named Mr. Terrific, and Krypto, Superman’s mischievous and scene-stealing superdog.
The film also features a genuinely endearing and vulnerable Superman, portrayed with charm by David Corenswet, making him easy to root for. It’s an enjoyable, thrilling, and romantic movie, with a touch of social commentary. Importantly, it establishes a high bar for future DC films, which is promising as it’s intended to be the first in a whole series.
1. The Naked Gun
I really needed a good laugh, and the 2025 film *The Naked Gun* delivered! It’s 85 minutes of constant humor, packed with visual gags, silly puns, and outrageous jokes. It cleverly satirizes pop culture and feels like one of the best franchise revivals of the past few years. (It’s so funny, you’ll want to see it again to catch everything!)
Liam Neeson stars as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s iconic, clumsy detective. Like his father, Neeson’s Drebin is a tough but inept investigator who finds himself solving a case involving a villainous businessman (Danny Huston). Throughout his investigation in Los Angeles, Drebin shares hilarious internal thoughts, including a particularly outrageous observation about his love interest (Pamela Anderson) and her impressive figure. This new *Naked Gun* proves that spoof comedies – and comedies in theaters in general – still have a lot to offer.
