At the beginning of the Star Wars prequels, the Republic enjoys a convenient situation. As the galaxy’s leading power, it doesn’t need a traditional military because the Jedi maintain peace. With no major threats on the horizon, Palpatine cleverly manipulates the Trade Federation into secretly building a droid army to challenge the Jedi. When the Republic is forced to react, they gratefully accept a ready-made clone army that unexpectedly becomes available, allowing them to address the new threat.
As a huge Star Wars fan, it’s always been a bit heartbreaking knowing the clones were being manipulated by Palpatine with those inhibitor chips. It basically took away their free will! But even with all that going against them, some of those soldiers *still* managed to be amazing and really impact the story. So, I put together a list of what I think are the seven best Clone Troopers, ranking them based on how much of a difference they made to the whole saga.
7) Hunter
The Bad Batch is central to any discussion about clones. This group of unique soldiers fought with courage throughout the Clone Wars, led by Hunter. Luckily, a defect prevented their control chips from working, saving them from participating in Order 66. Hunter’s smart decisions and strategic abilities protect his team, including Omega, a clone the Empire is particularly interested in. He’s crucial to slowing down the Empire’s cloning efforts, and it’s uncertain how far their project would have progressed without him.
6) Cody
Throughout the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi consistently led successful operations, often acknowledging Codyās contributions. Although Cody initially followed Order 66, tragically turning against the Jedi heād pledged to defend, he ultimately didnāt remain loyal to the Empire. After a harrowing mission on Desix, Cody deserted his post, realizing he was being treated as a weapon rather than an individual. While desertion didnāt erase his earlier actions, Cody did enough to redeem himself.
5) Echo
When the Clone Wars began, Echo was a key soldier in Captain Rex’s 501st Legion. He bravely risked everything to save his fellow clones, even appearing to sacrifice himself on Lola Sayu. But he was captured by the Separatists and transformed into a cyborg, forced to share information with the enemy. After escaping, Echo seized his opportunity for a new life and joined the Bad Batch. Dedicated to protecting clones throughout the galaxy, he consistently proves to be a highly effective soldier.
4) Tech
Though Echo and Hunter give the Bad Batch a welcoming appearance, Tech often challenges that impression with his blunt honesty. When they’re in trouble, however, he’s unmatched at finding solutions. Unfortunately, their mission on Eriadu proves too difficult, even for him. He bravely sacrifices himself so his teammates can survive and continue protecting the galaxy. This selfless act places him among the most noble characters in the Star Wars universe.
3) Crosshair
It’s surprising that Crosshair, despite betraying his squad and continuing to work with the Empire even after his control chip was removed, is considered the most prominent member of the Bad Batch. Ultimately, Crosshair is simply searching for his purpose, and he initially believes that lies with Palpatine’s forces. However, he eventually recognizes his mistakes and ends up defending Omega from his former allies. Like Anakin Skywalker and Kylo Ren, Crosshairās story is a powerful example of redemption in the Star Wars universe.
2) Rex
Rex is one of the most loyal characters in the Star Wars galaxy. He initially serves with Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, developing genuine friendships with them alongside their commander-soldier relationship. His dedication is so strong that he defies the dangerous Order 66, helping Ahsoka escape. This bravery ultimately leads to Ahsoka removing the control chip from his brain, allowing him to join the Rebellion and play a crucial role. Rexās story is considered one of the best, and heād be at the top of this list if it werenāt for another important character in his life.
1) Fives
Fives initially appears to be a typical clone trooper in the 501st Legion, enjoying friendly banter and fighting droids. However, everything shifts when he discovers the inhibitor chips and desperately tries to warn his fellow clones about the danger. Though he doesnāt reveal Palpatineās scheme to the galaxy before his untimely death, he sparks a crucial investigation. Ultimately, the clones who survive Order 66 owe their lives to Fives, who was simply trying to do what was right.
