Dragon Ball Delays Its Most Anticipated Release of 2026

Even after four decades, Akira Toriyama’s *Dragon Ball* continues to be a hugely important and popular anime and manga series. However, following Toriyama’s passing last year, there haven’t been any announcements about new anime projects. The *Dragon Ball Super* manga also paused publication, though Toyotaro is continuing the work and released a new chapter earlier this year – a full resumption of the manga is still yet to be scheduled. The anime hasn’t had a follow-up to *Dragon Ball Super* since 2018, when it featured Ultra Instinct, a particularly impressive transformation that combined Goku’s skills with a powerful, ancient technique.

Anime and manga fans were eagerly anticipating the release of the Dragon Ball Complete 42-Volume Box Set, originally scheduled for February 4th, 2026. However, Dragon Ball’s official X account announced a delay. Due to a huge number of pre-orders, the release is now set for April 3rd, 2026. Publisher Shueisha needs extra time to fulfill the unexpectedly high demand. Please note that the release date might be different depending on where you are located.

Dragon Ball Released a Special Project to Commemorate the 40th Anniversary

The *Dragon Ball Super Gallery* project began in 2021 as a celebration of the upcoming 40th anniversary of the *Dragon Ball* franchise. Forty-two famous manga artists, including Eiichiro Oda (creator of *One Piece*) and Tite Kubo (creator of *Bleach*), participated by recreating a *Dragon Ball* volume cover in their own style, as a tribute to Toriyama’s decades of work. These illustrations were published monthly, starting in September 2021, in Shueisha’s *Saikyo Jump* magazine.

To honor Toriyama, each artist contributing to the special manga covers also included a personal message about what *Dragon Ball* meant to them. The project began with Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of *Naruto*, redesigning the cover of the first volume, and concluded with Eiichiro Oda, the creator of *One Piece*. Pre-orders for the box set, which features both the original and redesigned covers, began in May 2025, but were limited to customers in Japan. The set also includes eight unique dividers and a set of cards to display all 42 covers, as well as gallery artwork.

I noticed pre-orders for the box set closed in August, even before a U.S. release date was announced. With the release now delayed in Japan, it looks like fans worldwide will have to be patient. Some stores, like Amazon, are offering to ship copies directly from Japan, but those will be in Japanese. If you’re hoping for the English version, you’ll need to wait a bit longer. The good news is the delay is only about two months, and we might hear something about the English release soon after it comes out in Japan.
