5 Actors Who Could Totally Play Their Best Animated Characters in Live Action

As more universes from films and television shows merge across various platforms and formats, actresses like Katee Sackhoff can portray their characters not just across different parts of a franchise, but also between different media. For instance, following her voice role as the beloved character Bo-Katan Kryze in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, Sackhoff effortlessly translated the character to live-action on The Mandalorian.

It’s interesting to note that Sackhoff is among the rare actors who have portrayed their characters in both live-action and animation. Here’s hoping she won’t be the only one. In fact, we’ve put together a list of actors who could bring their iconic animated characters to life in real-life: a fascinating thought, wouldn’t you agree?

1) Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman

In 2023’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” Issa Rae was an ideal fit to voice the spirited and action-packed Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman. Not every superhero can ride a motorcycle, assist the Spider Society in apprehending anomalies while pregnant, and Rae brought humor, authenticity, and compassion to Jessica that served as a refreshing contrast to Miguel O’Hara’s steadfast intensity in “Across the Spider-Verse.” Given her prominent roles in live-action series such as “Insecure,” “Barbie,” and “American Fiction,” and her age aligning with Jessica’s, it seems only fitting for Rae herself to portray Spider-Woman in future Avengers films or even “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Unlike co-star Oscar Isaac, who has another live-action role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Rae would be a delightful new addition to the franchise as either her “Spider-Verse” character or another iteration of Spider-Woman.

2) Ross Marquand as Charles Xavier/Professor X

Not many actors maintain successful careers simultaneously in live-action and voiceover roles like Ross Marquand. His impressive portfolio includes portraying Aaron on The Walking Dead for six seasons, while also showcasing an extensive list of voice acting credits such as Invincible, What If…?, and of course, Charles Xavier/Professor X in X-Men ’97. With Marvel officially integrating the X-Men into the MCU, we believe Marquand deserves strong consideration for the role of live-action Professor X. His experience playing this character on X-Men ’97, combined with the critical praise he received, makes him a prime candidate. Furthermore, his physical appearance with a shaved head suits the role perfectly, and since he’s relatively young, he can grow into it convincingly. And while some might argue that he already played Red Skull/Stonekeeper in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, we can all agree that under the prosthetics, his appearance was different enough to reprise the role of Professor X, correct?

3) Jason Isaacs as The Grand Inquisitor

Surely, we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing The Grand Inquisitor on stage. Though we appreciate Rupert Friend’s performance, we can’t help but wonder why they didn’t bring back Jason Isaacs, who originally played the character in Star Wars Rebels. Isaacs is a top-notch actor, renowned for his villain roles such as The Grand Inquisitor. His portrayal of this character is not only iconic but also incredibly intimidating. Leaving him out of Obi-Wan Kenobi seemed like a significant missed chance, given that few actors possess the stature and impact Isaacs has. We remain hopeful that he might yet play The Grand Inquisitor in another live-action Star Wars production someday.

4) Amy Poehler as Joy

In simple terms, the “Inside Out” movies have earned over $2.5 billion globally. With such a successful animated franchise, it’s common for Disney to plan a live-action adaptation. If Disney is contemplating a live-action or mixed-media version of “Inside Out”, they might not need to search any further for Joy than Amy Poehler. Poehler has voiced the spirited character of joy in both films, and she even looks similar to the character with her bright eyes and almost constant smile. Apart from “Inside Out”, Poehler is best recognized for her role as Leslie Knope on the TV series “Parks and Recreation”. Given that Poehler often makes us laugh with her physical comedy from “Saturday Night Live” and wit on her podcast “Good Hang with Amy Poehler”, it seems she wouldn’t find it challenging to bring Joy to life in a live-action setting.

5) Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan

The actor who was popular in the ’90s as a teen idol, voiced the character Kanan Jarrus (formerly known as Caleb Dume) across various Star Wars projects, including Star Wars Rebels, and had a short but crucial voiceover role in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. He was one of the spirits that motivated Rey to defeat Darth Sidious. Since Prinze Jr., who has spent most of a decade with this character, is returning to the big screen for the live-action continuation of I Know What You Did Last Summer, we hope that both Lucasfilm and Prinze Jr. himself consider bringing Kanan into live-action as well.
