World’s Edge, the studio that makes Age of Empires games, appears to be developing a new title in the series. Microsoft recently posted job openings for experienced Unreal Engine engineers who will be working on future Age of Empires projects.
Unreal Engine Enters the Battlefield
I was checking out the job listings for Xbox Game Studios, and it looks like they’re really continuing the Age of Empires tradition! They’re looking for engineers who are seriously skilled in Unreal Engine. Basically, they want people who *really* know their way around things like Blueprints, the Gameplay Ability System, StateTree, and Mass Entity – and have actually shipped games made with Unreal to different platforms before. Sounds like a challenging but awesome opportunity for any Unreal pro!
This marks a significant change for the game series, which previously relied on technology developed internally. Switching to Unreal Engine likely means Microsoft is updating the game’s graphics and technology for upcoming releases.
Not Necessarily Age of Empires 5, But Something Big
Although many fans thought this meant Age of Empires 5 was coming, the information doesn’t actually confirm that.
It could be:
- A full sequel,
- A remake or remaster of a previous entry,
- Or even a spin-off project exploring a new style of RTS gameplay.
No matter what, the fact that Unreal Engine is being used suggests a significant upgrade to the game’s technology.
Could the Series Return to Ancient Times?
Although the game’s location hasn’t been revealed, many players have expressed a desire to return to the ancient and early medieval settings of the first games. Considering 2027 will be the 30th anniversary of the original release, it would be a perfect opportunity to revisit that era.
A Promising Future for the RTS Classic
No matter if it’s a completely new game, a reimagining of an old favorite, or a bold new experiment, Microsoft’s decision to use Unreal Engine demonstrates their dedication to the future of the Age of Empires series.
If World’s Edge successfully blends the traditional strategic gameplay of the series with today’s technology, it could mark a fantastic new era for real-time strategy game enthusiasts.
