Alex Kingston is offering a look into her heartbreaking health battle.
The former *ER* actress revealed she was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2024, following years of experiencing symptoms that doctors couldn’t explain.
Alex, 62, recently told *The Independent* that he initially believed his declining health was simply a natural part of aging. “I just accepted it and thought, ‘This is what being in my sixties is like,'” he said. However, he later realized his symptoms were actually caused by an underlying illness.
The *Doctor Who* actress shared that she dealt with bloating and aches for years, but she only sought a second opinion from her doctor when she noticed blood in her urine. Alex, who shares 24-year-old daughter Salome Haertel with her ex-husband Florian Haertel, experienced another frightening health issue while on stage.
She remembered a frightening moment on stage. “I suddenly started bleeding heavily,” she said. “It was a shock. I just squeezed my legs together and hoped it would stop. Thankfully, the costume staff were amazing. I quickly asked for pads, we stuffed them in my pants, and I went right back out to finish the show.”
Alex didn’t find out she had uterine cancer until after her six-week performance in the show was over, despite it being a frightening ordeal.
The *Law & Order: Special Victims Unit* actor said she didn’t allow herself to think the worst after receiving the news. She was shocked, as she usually has a positive attitude. Even though she felt something was seriously wrong, she initially believed it was something less severe, like a urinary tract infection or fibroids.
Alex, now married to film producer Jonathan Stamp, revealed she had the disease located in her fallopian tubes, but thankfully it hadn’t reached her ovaries. She then spent the remainder of the year undergoing treatment.
She shared that she underwent a significant surgery – a hysterectomy – and followed it up with radiation therapy, which consumed a large portion of her time and energy.
Now that the BAFTA-nominated actress is recovering, she’s shared that going through this difficult time helped her rediscover who she is.
Even after everything she’d been through – and she acknowledged cancer is incredibly difficult – she found strength to undergo the treatment needed to regain her health. She said the moment she had the surgery, she instantly felt like her old self again.
