7 Weirdest Green Lantern Constructs DC Probably Wants to Forget, Ranked

Green Lantern rings are incredibly powerful tools in the DC Universe, able to create almost anything the user can think of – from armor and weapons to countless other imaginative creations. However, not every creation made with a ring is particularly useful. Over time, some Green Lanterns have come up with constructs that are just strange or don’t make much sense. Some make simple jobs harder than they need to be, while others raise questions about the ring’s abilities. While Green Lanterns often rely on a few favorite constructs, there are definitely some they should avoid altogether.

Over the years, many characters in DC Comics have used the Green Lantern ring to create objects and shapes from green energy. However, some of these creations were so strange, inappropriate, or ridiculous that DC Comics seems to want fans to forget they ever existed.

7) Giant Pie

Black Hand is now known as one of DC’s scariest villains, leading the terrifying Black Lantern Corps. But he wasn’t always so frightening. He started as a more comical Green Lantern enemy with the ability to absorb energy and create objects from it. Once, he even absorbed energy from Hal Jordan and used it to hit the hero with a giant cream pie! Instead of building a serious weapon, Black Hand decided to play a prank. Considering how dark the character has become, DC likely prefers to forget these silly moments from his past.

6) Electric Chair

After Major Force killed Kyle Rayner’s girlfriend and left her body in a refrigerator, Kyle vowed to get revenge. Driven by rage, he built a working electric chair and repeatedly shocked Major Force with it. While the electric chair didn’t kill the villain, it inflicted terrible pain and was a shockingly cruel act. This moment, where Kyle resorts to such inhumane methods, is deeply disturbing and highlights a dangerous lapse in judgment. The electric chair is a morally reprehensible weapon and should never be used again.

5) Giant Liquor Bottle

Driving under the influence is always wrong, and when Hal Jordan found a drunk man asleep in his car, he delivered a fitting, yet complicated, punishment. The driver woke up to find himself stuck inside a massive, empty liquor bottle. Hal then left the scene, leaving the man trapped for the police to find. This creates a tricky situation – how will the police even get him out? Plus, Hal would have to constantly maintain the energy construct of the bottle, even when he wasn’t nearby, to prevent it from vanishing. It’s a needlessly complicated situation for everyone involved.

4) Super-Aspirin

Green Lanterns can create anything they visualize using their rings, but a recent event presents a logical problem. Hal Jordan was captured and tortured by aliens. To cope with the pain, he imagined a powerful painkiller – a “Super-Aspirin” – which gave him the strength to escape. However, this doesn’t quite add up. Once he created the pill, he’d have to constantly maintain its existence for it to dissolve and work. Does he have to consciously create every single chemical needed for the medicine to function? And how long would it take for the imaginary pill to actually be absorbed into his system? These issues make this a confusing and difficult scenario to understand.

3) Giant Construct-Making Pencils

Kyle Rayner, a Green Lantern known for his imaginative creations, often builds constructs based on his background as a comic artist. However, some of his ideas are simply unnecessary. During a fight with Parallax, a being powered by fear, Kyle actually created a giant hand and pencil to *draw* the constructs he wanted. He even used the eraser to dismiss them! This is odd because the Green Lantern ring can instantly create and destroy anything he imagines with just a thought. The pencil just added an extra, unhelpful step that didn’t make him any better at fighting Parallax.

2) Hal Turns Himself Into a Letter

The Silver Age of DC Comics was known for embracing even the strangest ideas. One example involves Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, who cleverly outsmarted a spy after being hypnotized into revealing Air Force secrets. The spy forced Hal to write down the information, so Hal used his Green Lantern ring to *become* a letter and had his friend, Tom, mail himself! When the spy received the letter, Hal unexpectedly punched him right in the face – a move straight out of a cartoon. It was a wildly complicated and illogical plan, stretching the limits of what the Green Lantern ring could even do.

1) Bye Bye Bats

As a huge comic book fan, I always get a kick out of the rivalry between Batman and Guy Gardner! It’s just… classic. But seriously, Guy Gardner, with all that power from his Green Lantern ring, often uses it for the silliest things. And this story? Oh man. He was leaving the Justice League space station for a mission and decided to give Batman a ‘farewell gift.’ He literally pressed his bare rear end against the window and *wrote* “Bye Bye Bats” with the ring’s energy! It’s such a ridiculous, immature moment, and honestly, it feels like a total misuse of the ring’s incredible power. It just… cheapens the whole thing, you know? It’s a funny story, but it really highlights how Guy Gardner can take something awesome and just… make it weird.
