The Marvel Cinematic Universe has successfully adapted many popular characters and stories from Marvel comics. While some characters have a long history in the comics, the MCU has occasionally found ways to make them even better. However, not every adaptation is an improvement. Recently, at New York Comic Con, Marvel announced that two movie villains will be getting continuations that fans felt they deserved but didn’t receive in the main MCU timeline.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was so excited by all the symbiote news at New York Comic Con! But the biggest announcement, hands down, was the new ‘Queen in Black’ event. It’s connected to the awesome ‘King in Black’ storyline we loved a while back, and it all kicks off from the crazy ending of *Venom* #250 – seriously, Knull and Hela are back! It feels like Marvel is finally setting things up to give these two villains the big-screen stories we’ve always dreamed of, and honestly, it’s about time!
Queen in Black Could Be the Knull Story We Never Had a Chance to See on the Big Screen
Knull first appeared in the popular Venom comics series by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman, but he truly became a major villain during the ‘King in Black’ event. He quickly proved to be one of Marvel’s most dangerous enemies, requiring nearly all of the heroes to unite and defeat him and his vast army.
Fans were incredibly excited when Knull was hinted at in promotion for *Venom: The Last Dance*, anticipating an epic showdown. However, the movie didn’t deliver on that promise. Knull appeared as a distant threat in the background, and the expected battle never happened – it was only suggested at the very end. With *The Last Dance* likely being the last *Venom* movie starring Tom Hardy, there’s little opportunity for Sony and Marvel to follow through on that exciting setup, meaning a potentially great storyline might end up being forgotten.
Good news for fans: Knull will continue to appear in Marvel comics! After a brief hiatus, the character is back and will be battling Hela to reclaim his throne and the power she previously took from him. A new solo series by Al Ewing, Tom Waltz, Juanan Ramirez, and Ryan Stegman will continue Knull’s story – you can see the cover art above.
Queen in Black Will Give Hela the Spotlight She’s So Richly Deserved in the MCU
Although Hela appeared in Thor: Ragnarok much more than Knull did in Venom: The Last Dance, fans were eager to see more of the impressive Asgardian villain. However, after being defeated by Surtur at the end of Thor: Ragnarok, Hela was essentially removed as a threat, and her power was no longer a factor.
A frequent problem with Marvel movies is eliminating interesting villains after just one film, and Hela unfortunately fell into this pattern. She died in *Thor: Ragnarok*, which meant fans missed out on potential future appearances. Hela was a uniquely strong opponent for both Thor and Loki, and posed a real threat to all of Asgard. While Surtur ultimately defeated her, many viewers would have liked to see her return somehow, even though her death in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed pretty final.
Let’s talk about *Venom* #250. In it, Hela has captured Knull and plans to use the power of symbiotes to strengthen her position and prevent Knull from challenging her. If Marvel makes another Thor movie, there’s a lot of potential with Hela, especially exploring her relationships with her siblings and her place in the MCU. A storyline like this could elevate Hela the way the first *Avengers* movie did for Loki – turning her from a villain specifically for Thor into a major threat requiring the full Avengers team to defeat her.
In the comics, Hela is taking on Knull directly by becoming the Queen in Black, opening up a storyline we hadn’t seen before and potentially giving her the immense power she’s earned. This sets up an epic clash between two incredibly powerful beings. While Hela and Knull would both need to be reintroduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s definitely possible. To fully explore Knull’s character, however, it would require a significant commitment to his storyline.
Both Hela and Knull could become major players in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it remains to be seen if they’ll get the spotlight they deserve. Knull felt like a setup for a story that never materialized, and Hela was defeated before she could fully develop as a character. Fortunately, in the comic books, Hela is finally reaching her full potential.
Marvel’s Queen in Black will land in comic stores in Summer of 2026.
