The DCU Just Created a Brand New Supervillain, And It Changes Comics Canon

The DC Universe officially launched this year, introducing both new heroes – like Superman, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl – and villains. Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor was a standout, immediately establishing both the character and the actor as a force to be reckoned with. While Lex Luthor remains a significant threat, the franchise also subtly introduced another villain who will be a looming presence in future stories.

The latest episode of *Peacemaker* Season 2 ended with a shock: Christopher Smith was arrested by ARGUS, and the portal to Earth X appeared to be shut down. However, a major reveal showed that the older version of Peacemaker’s brother, Keith (played by David Denman), actually survived. While it might not seem important at first, creator James Gunn insists that Captain Triumph’s survival on this alternate Earth is a significant development.

The DCU Has “Born” a New Supervillain in Captain Triumph

During a recent press conference with ComicBook, DC Studios head and creator of *Peacemaker*, James Gunn, discussed the future of the DC Universe and that shocking cliffhanger. When asked about Keith’s potential role in the DCU going forward, Gunn explained that while the ‘Salvation’ storyline will be the main focus, Keith will still be around, waiting for the right moment.

James Gunn jokingly suggested that Keith’s return from Earth X has turned him into a villain. However, Gunn emphasized that the main storyline focuses on the concept of Salvation, which is more thoroughly planned out than Keith’s specific arc. He does have ideas for what Keith will do next, but he’s still working out the details and ensuring everything fits together logically, given the show’s time-traveling and dimension-hopping elements. He wants to make sure any future plans for Keith are feasible and well-executed, but isn’t ready to reveal a timeline.

Interestingly, the name “Captain Triumph” actually comes from DC Comics history. The character originally appeared in comics published by Quality Comics in the 1940s, but DC later acquired the rights and included him in a few stories, like those featuring the *Teen Titans* and *Animal Man*.

The Captain Triumph featured in the *Peacemaker* series is completely different from the comic book version. They aren’t even the same character, and there’s no connection between them. While the comic book Captain Triumph has standard superhero abilities, the one in the show gets his powers from technology. Essentially, James Gunn used a character name owned by DC Comics and created his own original hero (who’s now a villain), free from the constraints of existing comic book storylines.

Now that the Salvation prison planet storyline is a major focus in the DC Universe, the villainous Keith from Earth-X might remain a threat for a while. However, this could actually be a positive thing. James Gunn is clearly building a long-term story around ideas he’s been passionate about, so when the Quantum Unfolding Chamber eventually opens and a powerful, enraged Captain Triumph emerges, fans will likely be thrilled to see this setup finally pay off.
