The Marvel and DC cinematic universes are currently on different paths. Marvel is trying to regain its momentum after a few underwhelming years, planning to reunite its heroes for the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday* movie, which will set the stage for an even larger film, *Avengers: Secret Wars* – based on the famous comic book storyline. DC, however, isn’t ready for a project of that scale. Having released only one movie so far, *Superman*, and while it does introduce several heroes, they haven’t yet built a team large enough for an *Avengerslevel event.
The DC Universe (DCU) is gradually revealing its overall plan, starting with Season 2 of *Peacemaker*. The season ends with a major cliffhanger that could take a long time to resolve. James Gunn seems to be building towards a DCU with the potential to be as epic in scope as *Avengers: Endgame*.
Everything in the DCU Is Leading to Salvation
James Gunn decided to build the larger DC Universe story gradually, holding off on major connections until the second project. The season finale of *Peacemaker* centers on Rick Flag Sr.’s search for a planet where dangerous individuals with superpowers can be sent. He names this planet “Salvation,” and gains backing for his plan from both the government and Lex Luthor. However, Flag Sr. also has personal motivations, so he uses Peacemaker as a test subject, sending him through a portal to see if the idea actually works.
If Rick Flag had read a comic book, he’d know the *Salvation Run* story begins with a good start for the heroes. Amanda Waller and Flag exile the most dangerous villains to a distant planet, but things get much worse when they discover beings from Apokolips are using the planet for training. Luthor and the others barely escape back to Earth, but that’s not the end of the story, as *Salvation Run* sets up a larger event that dwarfs it in comparison.
How the DCU Can Use Salvation to Create Its Own “Final Crisis”
The mini-series *Salvation Run* is connected to the larger “Countdown to Final Crisis” storyline, building up to the full-scale invasion of Earth by Darkseid’s army. Initially, the villains secretly possess and control people, creating chaos – like falsely accusing Hal Jordan of a crime. But their disguises don’t last, and when they reveal themselves, a major war begins. The fighting escalates to the point where Darkseid has to use his powerful Omega Beams, even targeting Batman, who unexpectedly finds himself sent back in time.
Honestly, I don’t think the DCU is quite ready for Batman to make a big, heroic sacrifice just yet – he hasn’t even *spoken* in these movies! But I think the upcoming film, *Salvation*, could lay some really cool groundwork. Things like hinting at, or even confirming, the connection between Apokolips and this new universe would be amazing. That would keep us all excited and patient until James Gunn and Peter Safran are ready to reveal the next big thing. It’s about building anticipation, you know?
Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
