What will Monster season 4 be about: Who was Lizzie Borden?

Season four of *Monster* will explore the story of Lizzie Borden, marking the first time the show has focused on a female suspect. Although details are still scarce, the season will be a significant step back in time, unfolding in 1892. We don’t yet know exactly how the show will approach the infamous case, but it promises a fresh perspective.

Unlike past cases where the accused were convicted, Lizzie was put on trial for the axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts, and was found not guilty.

I always understood Lizzie and her sister Emma grew up pretty religious, really involved in church and different groups. It was tough when their mom passed away, and then, three years later, their dad, Andrew, remarried Abby. From what I’ve read, things got really strained between the girls and their dad and Abby, especially when it came to money. Apparently, Lizzie and Emma didn’t get along with Abby at all – they just called her ‘Mrs. Borden’ and seemed to think she’d married their dad for his money and status. It sounds like a really difficult family situation.

On August 4th, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were discovered murdered in their home. Lizzie found her father, who had been resting on the couch, and immediately called for Bridget, the maid. Together, they searched the house and found Abby’s body in an upstairs bedroom. Both victims had been brutally attacked and killed with an axe.

The way the police investigated the murders faced criticism for being careless and lacking solid proof. Many people continued to speculate about who killed Andrew and Abby. At the time, police often commented on Lizzie’s behavior, and locals believed she had bought poison the day before the killings.

In the week following the murders and before Lizzie Borden was arrested, she burned a dress, telling people it had paint stains. However, prosecutors later argued the stains were actually blood, and Lizzie destroyed the dress to hide evidence.

Lizzie Borden’s trial received a lot of media attention, and she chose not to testify in her own defense. The evidence presented by witnesses wasn’t enough to reach a clear conclusion. On June 20, 1983, she was found not guilty, and no one else was ever accused of the murders. Despite the acquittal, Lizzie was shunned by people in her hometown of Fall River, and her reputation suffered further when she was later accused of stealing from a store.

Lizzie and Emma received a large inheritance from Andrew and continued living together for a decade. However, in 1905, Emma suddenly moved out and the sisters never reconciled. The falling out was rumored to have started when Lizzie hosted a party for her friend, the actress Nance O’Neil. Although the exact details of their disagreement remain unknown, many people at the time speculated about a close relationship between Lizzie and Nance.

Lizzie passed away from pneumonia on June 1st, 1927, at the age of 66. Her sister, Emma, died nine days after from a kidney condition.

We’ll need to wait and see what the new season of Monster will explore and which of the remaining murder theories it might investigate.

Ryan Murphy recently told Variety that the next season of the show will focus on female figures often labeled as ‘monsters,’ exploring the stories of women like Lizzie and others with similar reputations.

During the interview, Murphy mentioned Countess Elizabeth Báthory, a Hungarian aristocrat accused of terrible crimes like torture and murder around 1600, and Aileen Wuornos, a serial killer who was put to death in 2002.

He continued, explaining that many different types of figures are highlighted throughout the year. This project follows a similar idea: it examines well-known women who have been categorized in a certain way, and asks whether those labels truly fit.
