Dead Cells has quickly become incredibly popular thanks to its engaging and addictive gameplay. With a remarkable 96% positive rating on Steam, it’s widely considered one of the greatest roguelike games available.
It’s sad to see the game finally end, but I actually understand why the developers at Motion Twin decided to stop working on it. They even said in an interview that they think it was a *good* thing for us players, which is surprisingly comforting!
Unsurprisingly, a lot of fans weren’t pleased with the decision.

Gwen Massé, the artist and level designer, expressed immense pride in the completed project. However, they’re now moving on to focus on developing their new game, Windblown.
A Heavy Decision that Must Be Made Nonetheless
A year after Dead Cells was fully released, the game’s development shifted from Motion Twin to Evil Empire. Evil Empire continued to create fantastic updates for the game until 2024, when they were unfortunately asked to stop working on it.
Fans reacted negatively to the news, particularly because Motion Twin simultaneously revealed they were starting work on a new game called Windblown.
Both Massé and developer Yannick Berthier feel it was actually beneficial to stop updating Dead Cells. They believe finishing the game with their original vision was best, and now they’re completely dedicated to the Windblown expansion.
Windblown is currently available in Early Access and is receiving positive feedback from players. It’s a challenging roguelike game with impressive technology, and it also lets you play with friends. Only time will tell if it can become as popular as Dead Cells, though.
