The Diplomat’s Bradley Whitford reveals how he and Allison Janney use their West Wing history in Netflix series

Okay, so as a huge fan of ‘The Diplomat,’ I’m already counting down the days until season 3 to see what happens with Kate and Hal. But get this – if you loved ‘The West Wing,’ there’s a really cool connection you’re going to appreciate in the new season!

I’m so excited to hear Bradley Whitford is joining the show as Todd Penn, Grace Penn’s husband – and Grace is now the President after being Vice President! It’s fantastic because that means Bradley and Allison Janney, who were amazing together on *The West Wing*, are going to be working together again. It’s a real treat for fans like me!

I first learned about the project, maybe last summer? I was filming in Budapest when Debora texted me to see if I’d be interested. It was the role of Allison’s husband, and since I was already a fan of the show, I was incredibly excited.

I always enjoy working with Allison, and it’s a lot of fun to draw on our shared history and unique connection in our projects after knowing each other for so long.

Season 3 of The Diplomat begins immediately after the dramatic ending of season 2, where President Rayburn unexpectedly died following a troubling phone call with Hal. This leaves Kate in a difficult situation, as she’s just accused Grace of planning a terrorist attack and revealed her ambition to become Vice President.

With the President unexpectedly gone, and Kate’s husband Hal possibly involved, Grace Penn has stepped up as the new leader. Despite the chaos, Hal is still determined to get Kate elected as Vice President.

Kate unexpectedly finds herself in a position she didn’t seek, complete with a surprising amount of independence. As she navigates this new life, her friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison becomes more complex, and she develops a strangely compelling connection with Todd Penn, the First Gentleman.

Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell will reprise their leading roles, and David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh are also returning to the show.

You can watch the third season of The Diplomat on Netflix. The first two seasons are already available, and subscriptions start at just £5.99 per month. Netflix is also accessible through Sky Glass and Virgin Media Stream.
