While Star Trek’s first adventures featured powerful and ruthless villains, one mischievous character was surprisingly ignored for years. On this day in 1966, *Star Trek: The Original Series* introduced a purely self-interested human antagonist who proved to be a lot of fun. Though later villains like Khan and the Klingons became iconic enemies of *TOS*, this character’s potential wasn’t fully explored for almost sixty years.
Harcourt Fenton “Harry” Mudd was first introduced in the 1966 episode of the original Star Trek series that aired on October 13th. Actor Roger C. Carmel brilliantly played Mudd as a funny yet annoying character, and fans quickly fell in love with his over-the-top personality. Despite appearing 59 years ago, Mudd remained a surprisingly underused character in the Star Trek universe – until Rainn Wilson played a version of him in Discovery.
The Unsung Star Trek Villain: Harry Mudd
Harry Mudd stood out from typical *Star Trek* villains from the moment he appeared in “Mudd’s Women.” Most adversaries at the time had powerful alien abilities or aimed to conquer galaxies, but Mudd was a small-time, dishonest trader who smuggled women using a drug called “Venus Drug.” He returned in the Season 2 episode “I, Mudd,” trapping the crew of the Enterprise on a planet populated by androids designed to serve him. Although his episodes were lighthearted and often ridiculous, Mudd became a fan favorite. Unfortunately, the character was largely forgotten, treated as a minor con artist, and overshadowed by more prominent villains, meaning he never appeared again in the original *Star Trek* series.
For the next few decades, Harcourt Fenton Mudd largely disappeared from *Star Trek* after a quick return in the 1973 animated series. While the episode “Mudd’s Passion” was enjoyable, bringing back Carmel and his iconic mustache, it was hampered by a poorly received storyline where Nurse Chapel pursued him romantically. Most fans weren’t impressed with the episode overall. Although it prevented the character from being forgotten, it didn’t fully explore Mudd’s potential as a charming con artist.
Rainn Wilson Revives Mudd in Star Trek: Discovery
After more than forty years, the character of Harry Mudd was revisited in *Star Trek: Discovery*. Actor Rainn Wilson, known for *The Office*, played Mudd in two episodes of Season 1 and also directed an episode of *Star Trek: Short Treks*. The standout episode, “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad,” featured Mudd trapping the *Discovery* crew in a repeating time loop, repeatedly destroying the ship in his attempt to steal the secrets of the spore drive and sell the ship for profit. This updated version of Mudd, written by Mike McMahan, was a clever reimagining, adding a truly cruel edge to Wilson’s comedic talent. Though his mustache wasn’t quite as curly, this exaggerated villain made for some of the most enjoyable episodes of *Discovery*.
Fans were thrilled with the character’s return, feeling he finally got the intense and impactful storyline he deserved. Actor Wilson enjoyed playing the role so much that he proactively contacted the team behind *Strange New Worlds* with a suggestion to bring the character back, believing he’d be a perfect fit for that show’s style and time period. Fans agree. Even after 59 years, Harry Mudd remains a uniquely human and opportunistic figure in the Star Trek universe – a clever con artist who continues to hustle, even in a seemingly perfect future.
