Emmerdale’s Ryan Hawley teases Aaron’s “explosive” reaction to Robert’s secret husband – and backs surprise Kev story

Emmerdale’s Robert Sugden is about to face a major confrontation when his secret husband, Kev Townsend, shares a kiss with Aaron Dingle, according to Ryan Hawley. Hawley hints the scene will trigger a dramatic response.

“It’s going to be explosive,” he shared.

Aaron believes he and Robert are finally where they’re meant to be, having left all the past difficulties behind. With John no longer a factor, they’re looking forward to building the lives they’ve always envisioned.

The actor explained that a character suddenly appears claiming to be an old cellmate of Aaron’s, and then they’re unexpectedly seen kissing behind the Woolpack pub.

On top of everything else, Robert has discovered his half-brother has also been dishonest with him. It’s understandably a lot for Aaron to process.

When asked about Robert’s feelings for Kev, the actor explained that it’s currently uncertain how Robert feels. A man claiming to be Robert’s husband has appeared, but Robert is still trying to get together with Aaron. The central question is, who is this husband and what’s their story?

Hawley explained that Kev and Robert have a complex relationship, being both lovers and husbands. While they clearly care for each other, the extent of Robert’s love for both Kev and Aaron is a key question.

I don’t believe Robert wants to hurt Kev emotionally. He cares for Kev deeply, and his feelings go beyond simple thankfulness – they’re quite complex.

You know, it’s getting really interesting behind the scenes. I was reading an interview with one of the actors, Coghill, and they hinted at a really complex relationship between the characters. They said there are definitely feelings involved, but they’re… not exactly what you’d expect. It’s all very messy and adds another layer to the story, which I’m totally here for!

Considering these mysterious hints, it looks like we’re in for a wild ride, as Hawley and Coghill haven’t revealed everything just yet—but they promise to explore the history of the relationship between the characters as the story unfolds.

It’s clear Hawley wholeheartedly approves of the unexpected development with Kev’s character, believing it’s a strong addition to the ongoing storyline between Rob and Aaron (‘Robron’).

“It’s a completely different obstacle to anything else the couple have had,” he pointed out.

Stories wouldn’t be interesting if everything went smoothly for the characters. Constant ease would quickly become dull. To keep things engaging and reveal the strength of their connections, characters need challenges and conflicts to struggle with and ultimately overcome.

Kev is a compelling character because he’s both endearing and clearly struggling with past hurts. He’s someone you root for, and his humor makes him even more likable. We’ve been very fortunate to have Chris playing the role – he’s been fantastic.

He noted the situation was unique, something they hadn’t encountered previously. They’ve worked with a variety of actors, including Emily Head, Rebecca White, and more recently, John, each bringing a different approach.

“Kev’s a very different dynamic.”

“I hope people will be interested in that and want to see that story played out.”

You know, everyone keeps asking about ‘Robron,’ and honestly, it was a total thrill to work with Danny Miller again. I was joking around, but it’s true – getting to share a kiss with him was a huge reason I wanted to come back to the show. I was determined to make it happen, even after being away for five years!

Joining in Coghill’s playful teasing, he continued, “Things were different before I kissed Chris. Now that I have, I’m not sure who I like kissing more!”
