The main creative director behind the Assassin’s Creed games has left Ubisoft, only a couple of weeks after the company reorganized with new investment from Tencent.
Just a heads-up: the Assassin’s Creed series, along with Far Cry and Rainbow Six, is now being developed by a new team called Vantage Studios. This team is built from existing groups within Ubisoft.
This is all according to IGN, who cite correspondence from within the company.
Marc-Alexis Côté, a longtime veteran of Ubisoft with over 20 years of experience, is the franchise head in question. Reports suggest he was offered a leading position at Vantage Studios, but he declined the offer.
It’s unknown if Côté left because he wanted a fresh start, or if he didn’t agree with the company’s new plans. It’s possible both factors played a role.
I was really bummed to hear that Marc-Alexis was leaving Ubisoft, but they released a statement saying they’re confident the team will continue the great work he started. They’re super thankful for everything he’s done, especially how much he helped build the Assassin’s Creed series into what we all love today. It’s sad to see him go, but it sounds like his legacy will definitely live on!
Jonathan Dumont has clearly been a major force behind the Assassin’s Creed series, contributing as a director, producer, and in other key roles on several games.
Côté also seems to have been the one who initially planned the future of the Assassin’s Creed series. This means he likely approved and started work on the many Assassin’s Creed games currently being developed.
So, I was reading that Ubisoft apparently has Assassin’s Creed games mapped out for the next six years! It’s not just the big, main games either – they’re planning remakes and possibly even some multiplayer stuff on the side. It sounds like we’ll be busy for a while!
