While Jim Caviezel might not return as Jesus in Mel Gibson’s upcoming sequel, *The Resurrection of the Christ*, he’s taking on a different heroic role in the new film *Archangel*. Set to release on November 6, 2026, *Archangel* will also feature Olivia Thirlby, Garret Dillahunt, and Shea Whigham, and will be directed by Will Eubank.
In July, reports surfaced that Jim Caviezel would likely star in a new action thriller. The film follows Henry “Fitz” Fitzgerald, a former Green Beret who creates weapons for the military while living in Wyoming. When greedy businesspeople use legal loopholes to steal land and water from the locals, Fitz uses his own advanced weapons to fight back.
Jim Caviezel’s career received a significant boost when he played Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s 2004 film, *The Passion of the Christ*. Since then, he’s appeared in movies like *Paul, Apostle of Christ*, the TV series *Person of Interest*, and *Wyatt Earp*. Recently, he gained attention again for his role as Tim Ballard in *Sound of Freedom*, a successful independent film based on the true story of a former agent rescuing children from human traffickers.
Jim Caviezel was originally going to reprise his role as Jesus in Mel Gibson’s sequel to *The Passion of the Christ*, titled *The Resurrection of the Christ*. However, filming has now begun in Italy with a completely new cast, and the film is scheduled for release in two parts in 2027. While the exact reason for Caviezel’s departure isn’t confirmed, reports suggest that the expense of digitally making the original actors appear 20 years younger would have exceeded the film’s budget, leading to the decision to cast new actors.
‘Archangel’ Comes from ‘Land of Bad’ Director
Netflix
Originally, production on the movie *Archangel* was scheduled to start in August, directed by Will Eubank, known for his work on the 2024 film *Land of Bad*. That movie featured Liam and Luke Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Ricky Whittle, and Milo Ventimiglia, but unfortunately didn’t perform well when it was released in February 2024 – a time often considered unfavorable for movies. *Land of Bad* only earned $7 million, falling short of its $20 million production cost.
Despite a lukewarm critical reception (66% on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences loved *Land of Bad*, giving it a high 93% score on the Popcornmeter. Many now believe the film didn’t get the attention it deserved when it first came out, but it found a large audience after becoming available on Netflix in June 2025. Viewers particularly praised the thrilling action and suspenseful pacing.
Now that Eubank has shown he can deliver entertaining performances, *Archangel* has the potential to be another exciting action film – a classic story of one person fighting for what’s right – and it’s likely to be a hit with action movie lovers, both in theaters and on streaming services.
