Banjo-Kazooie Director Gregg Mayles Announces Departure from Rare After Over Three Decades

Longtime Rare employee Gregg Mayles has announced his departure from the company on social media. He shared that his last day at the studio has passed, and he accompanied the announcement with a farewell poem for his colleagues.

Mayles announced on social media that today was their last day at Rare. They expressed gratitude to everyone who enjoyed the games they worked on and also thanked their colleagues for their collaboration.

Paul Mayles has a long history with Rare, starting with his work on the game *Solar Jetman* in 1990. He’s held many different positions on various projects for the studio since then.

He later directed some of Rare’s most popular and highly-rated games, including *Donkey Kong Country* for the Super NES, *Banjo-Kazooie* and *Banjo-Tooie* for the Nintendo 64, and *Viva Piñata* on the Xbox 360. More recently, he served as creative director for the multiplayer pirate game *Sea of Thieves*.

Gregg Mayles leaving Rare raises questions about the future of the *Banjo-Kazooie* series. He was involved with the last *Banjo-Kazooie* game, *Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts*, for the Xbox 360. This follows comments from Grant Kirkhope, who composed the music for the original game, stating he doesn’t expect to see a new installment anytime soon.

Kirkhope shared on social media in January that he doesn’t believe another *Banjo* game will happen, adding that even if one were made, dedicated fans would likely find something to criticize. He feels this pattern has happened before and wouldn’t change. Despite this pessimism, he expressed interest in composing the music for a potential new *Banjo-Kazooie* game.

Mayles’s departure probably happened as Rare reorganized itself after canceling *Everwild* in July. Reports suggested the cancellation would lead to changes in how Rare operates.

Back in September, Louise O’Connor, a former executive producer at Rare, received a significant promotion. She’s now the chief of staff for all of Xbox Game Studios. O’Connor had a long history with Rare, starting with her work on the Nintendo 64 game *Conker’s Bad Fur Day* back in 2001.

Rare announced that they’re changing how new content is added to *Sea of Thieves*. Instead of releasing everything at once, updates will now roll out in stages over three months for each season. They also confirmed that the *Sea of Thieves* Insider Programme will return in 2026.
