Surprise Shonen Jump Series Has Been Censored in Many U.S. Schools

A recent report shows that one popular manga series from *Shonen Jump* has been removed from more schools across the United States than any other. While concerns about mature content in manga aren’t new, the number of school bans has significantly increased in the past year. Several series have been affected, but this particular title is receiving the most attention and facing the most widespread removal from school libraries.

A recent report by PEN America, as reported by Anime News Network, shows that Yusei Matsui’s manga series *Assassination Classroom* has been banned in at least 54 public schools across the United States during the 2024-2025 school year. While many manga titles have faced bans, *Assassination Classroom* is the most frequently targeted series, which isn’t surprising given its history with these types of restrictions.

Assassination Classroom Banned From Many U.S. Public Schools

The report counts each banned book as one instance, but if a school removes a whole series, it’s still only counted once. According to the report, *Assassination Classroom* has been banned in schools 54 times across Florida, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Texas, and South Carolina. However, it’s not the only manga facing this issue – many other titles from Shonen Jump have also been removed from school libraries this past year.

Many manga series have been removed from school libraries, including popular titles like *Attack on Titan, Bleach, Black Butler,* and *Naruto*. However, *Assassination Classroom* is receiving particular attention, likely due to its unique setting. Unlike most of the other banned series, *Assassination Classroom* is specifically set within a school classroom.

Why Is Assassination Classroom Getting Banned So Much?

It’s unclear why *Assassination Classroom* is receiving more scrutiny with these bans than other titles, but the series’ name likely plays a role. The show centers around students trying to kill their alien teacher to save the world. However, without knowing that context, the premise could easily be misinterpreted as promoting violence in schools. The fact that characters regularly use weapons to target their teacher might lead people unfamiliar with the story to want it removed from school libraries.

While the series doesn’t contain overly mature content – it originally appeared in a magazine for young boys – its setting in a school and central theme of assassinating a teacher make it likely to be banned in public schools. Despite this, *Assassination Classroom* is doing well and is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a new movie.
