The popular show *The Walking Dead* could continue for many years to come, potentially even past 2040. Since its debut in October 2010, the AMC series about surviving a zombie apocalypse became a huge cultural hit, running for 11 seasons and leading to several spin-off shows. With the show’s 15th anniversary approaching on October 31st, writer and executive producer Scott Gimple hinted at a promising future for the franchise.
Speaking at a recent event in Cannes with the cast of *The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon*, Glen Mazzara suggested that the show’s current group of characters might still be featured in the series fifteen years from now, as reported by *Variety*.
According to Scott Gimple, the world of *The Walking Dead* has a lot of potential for future stories, much like the *Daryl Dixon* series which followed Norman Reedus’ character to France. He hinted that there are plenty of other countries and continents they could explore, and he’s excited to see how the characters and stories develop over time. He believes that new locations will naturally inspire future storylines.
Where Could the Walking Dead Walk Next?
Gimple didn’t share specific details about the future of *The Walking Dead*, but he suggested it could grow into something similar to Marvel or DC. He pointed to those franchises as examples of how to tell ongoing stories with connected characters and a continuously expanding universe.
Gimple explained that the overarching narrative was cohesive, despite branching out in many ways. He added that even well-established characters could be placed in new settings with unique obstacles, allowing them to grow and change.
The world of *The Walking Dead* has expanded far beyond the original show with a number of popular spin-offs. It began with *Fear The Walking Dead*, which explored the very beginning of the zombie outbreak and moved the story outside the U.S. for the first time, setting events in Mexico. The franchise then grew to include *The Walking Dead: World Beyond*, set a decade into the apocalypse in Nebraska; the anthology series *Tales of the Walking Dead*, featuring both new and familiar faces; the limited series *The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live*, focusing on Rick and Michonne; and the currently airing *The Walking Dead: Dead City*, starring Maggie and Negan, and *The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon*, which took the story to a new international location.
It’s exciting to think about the future of *The Walking Dead*. The show has so many characters who could star in their own series – like Judith Grimes, who embodies the generation born during the zombie outbreak. Plus, the franchise could move to many different settings, from cities in Japan to the United Kingdom, which Season 2 of *Daryl Dixon* showed as a rare place that seemingly made it through the apocalypse.
