Kevin Federline Says He Fought With Britney Spears Over Cocaine Use

Kevin Federline says he remembers when he drew the line with ex Britney Spears. 

In his upcoming memoir, You Thought You Knew, releasing October 21st, the former dancer claims the beginning of the end of his three-year marriage to the singer of “Circus” started with an argument about her possible drug use. This fight reportedly happened at the release party for his 2006 album, Playing With Fire.

In his book, Kevin recounted the shocking moment he first saw Britney Spears and a friend using cocaine. He described seeing them snorting the drug off a table, and was stunned that they didn’t attempt to conceal it. He also noted that Britney was still breastfeeding their sons, Sean Preston, now 20, and Jayden James, now 19, at the time.

Although he was 47 at the time and claims he wasn’t bothered by his wife’s drug use, he explained that his main concern was the impact on their children.

Kevin explained that he was very upset because he and Britney, who is now 43, didn’t have baby formula. He worried that she would breastfeed their children while still having drugs in her system.

He explained he was deeply concerned for the children’s safety. He’d previously asked her not to do what she was doing, and wasn’t bothered by her simply being present – he would have welcomed her support if she’d communicated it beforehand. They could have even made arrangements, like having her pump breast milk for their son so his mother would be prepared. However, he felt her behavior that night stemmed from a separate issue, unrelated to their situation.

I heard that later that night, Kevin tried to talk to Britney one-on-one about what he was going through, but it sounds like the conversation quickly turned into a really intense argument. It’s just so sad to think about how things escalated so fast.

Kevin remembered telling her, “Please don’t go home and breastfeed the kids when you’re feeling like this. Call your mom or someone who can help. We need to get some formula. You can’t handle this right now.” He said she immediately became furious, her eyes blazing with anger. He felt like she wanted to hit him, but instead, she stood up, grabbed her drink, and threw it in his face – right in front of everyone at the table, including his family and closest friends. He was completely shocked and ended up soaked with her vodka cranberry.

Kevin said that the actress from *Crossroads* left the party right after their argument. He explained she left angrily with her team, and he was left feeling embarrassed, upset, and concerned.

Kevin later described the fight as the start of the problems that ultimately led to their breakup and divorce, which was finalized in 2007.

The issue with breastfeeding was the breaking point for us, he said. It was the final thing that made him end the relationship. He wasn’t sure if it was the only reason, or if it was just the culmination of many smaller problems. But in that moment, everything felt like it was falling apart.

TopMob News has reached out to Britney’s rep for comment, but has not yet heard back. 

Britney hasn’t spoken directly about claims Kevin made regarding a party, but she did respond to his memoir by saying that the ‘little lies’ in it are benefiting him while she’s the one who’s truly being hurt.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) from October 16th, she expressed her unwavering love for her sons and asked people to disregard inaccurate tabloid stories about her well-being and struggles with alcohol. She stated that she’s a thoughtful person who has been prioritizing a private life for the past five years, and she felt compelled to address the rumors because she’d reached her limit – something she believes any woman would do.

Kevin and Britney briefly met when he was a backup dancer for the opening act of her tour, LFO. However, they didn’t really connect until they ran into each other at a Hollywood nightclub called Joseph’s in April 2004 while hanging out with friends.

Kevin remembered chatting briefly before they started dancing. It wasn’t anything crazy, just some lighthearted fun. He admitted that, as a 25-year-old, his main thought was simply wanting to impress her.

Kevin and his group then went to the Beverly Hills Hotel. Kevin shared that he and Britney relaxed by her private bungalow’s hot tub while their friends enjoyed the pool.

Kevin recalls that while everyone was still swimming, Britney led him into the bungalow after exiting the hot tub. Once inside, she immediately became intimate, removing her underwear and passionately kissing him while ripping at his clothes. They awkwardly made their way toward the bed as he fumbled to take off his pants.

He described their encounter as intensely physical, explaining they had a strong, immediate connection and a lot of chemistry. He said it was a passionate and energetic experience, driven by mutual attraction.

Britney publicly responded to Kevin’s book, calling it “extremely hurtful and exhausting.” Previously, her representative told TopMob News that Britney’s only concern is the well-being of her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, amidst all the public attention surrounding the book.

I remember when news first started swirling about Kevin and Britney! Apparently, they were secretly staying together at her hotel bungalow for days, trying to keep things under wraps. It wasn’t until they were spotted out on the beach that the paparazzi caught on. Those photos then landed on Shar’s desk, and it was especially tough timing because she was pregnant with their second child at the time.

Kevin recalled feeling incredibly nervous while he finally called her, pacing back and forth as his heart raced. He explained his connection with Britney and why he couldn’t deny his feelings. He could tell she was deeply hurt and angry, but beneath the anger, he sensed a profound sadness that he knew he couldn’t fix.

In hindsight, Kevin admitted he should have been more honest about his unhappiness with Shar in their relationship.

I avoided dealing with problems directly, hoping they would just go away. I thought creating distance would make things simpler, but it only postponed what had to happen. When we finally talked, it was too late – I’d already allowed her to figure out what was going on by herself. The pictures of Britney and me at the beach unfortunately confirmed her suspicions.

Kevin had already started to develop strong feelings for Britney when he joined her on the European leg of her 2004 tour. He was therefore shocked when he says he unexpectedly found Britney and one of her dancers together in their hotel room in Amsterdam.

In his memoir, Kevin described a passionate moment with Britney, writing that they were intensely kissing. He explained it happened so quickly, he didn’t have time to fully register what was happening.

Kevin explained that he left the room right away to book a flight home, but Britney began to apologize.

Kevin explained that she admitted she hadn’t understood how committed he was to their relationship. She’d been feeling overwhelmed and said getting together was a mistake. He described the conversation as a major shift in their dynamic – their first real argument. He believes it was when she finally understood he wasn’t interested in any benefits or attention that came with her, but genuinely cared for her.

The dancer said Britney first mentioned getting married on the plane ride back to the U.S. after finishing the European part of her tour.

He recalled being in first class, enjoying cocktails and a conversation about life, when suddenly, she proposed. He admitted he reacted by laughing it off and turning her down, trying to appear calm about it.

Kevin noticed Britney seemed a bit surprised, but they didn’t discuss it until June 2004, after she hurt her knee and had to end her tour for surgery.

Kevin, while staying with Britney as she recovered, kept thinking about a conversation they’d had on the plane. He replayed her words in his mind, questioning whether he’d dismissed them too quickly. Once Britney felt well enough to consider flying again, he finally gathered the courage to answer a question she’d posed to him weeks before.

“We didn’t even have a ring,” Kevin said. “It began with a genuine conversation, where we both realized what we wanted for the future. We were simply sharing a special moment together, and decided then and there that we were going to get married.”

According to Kevin, Britney Spears spoke with her former fiancé, Justin Timberlake, the night before their planned wedding in October 2004 to try and resolve some remaining issues.

I assumed she was speaking with her mother or sister, so I returned to the room. When she came back, it was clear she had been upset and crying.

Kevin shared that Britney told him she needed to speak with Justin to close one part of her life and move forward.

 

Kevin said Britney told him she called Justin to get some peace of mind, but he doesn’t think she ever truly moved on from their split in 2002. He believes she still has feelings for the *NSYNC member.

In his book, Kevin explained that even after they got married, his wife still seemed to have feelings for her ex, Justin. He noticed Justin’s name would come up frequently in their conversations, and he could tell a part of her heart remained connected to him.

He explained that she may have cared for him, but she was still hung up on Justin. He said that being with someone who’s still in love with another person is obvious, even if she doesn’t admit it. He felt like it was an impossible situation – you can’t win against someone’s past feelings.

By early 2006, the couple had welcomed their first son, Sean Preston, and were expecting their second child, Jayden James. Kevin later revealed that even then, there were early warning signs of trouble in their relationship, such as disagreements about his marijuana use.

Kevin described Britney suddenly entering the bedroom with Preston and immediately becoming very angry with him. He said she was already aware of who he was when they got married, but she began yelling at him aggressively. He claims she then slapped him while holding their son.

Kevin said that confrontation “was the first time things got physical.”

“It wouldn’t be the last,” he wrote, “but that one stuck with me.”

After Kevin released his memoir, Britney posted on X (formerly Twitter) in October 2025, saying his ongoing manipulation is deeply hurtful and draining.

 

Even though Kevin believed their relationship changed after the reported incident, he was surprised to learn Britney was filing for divorce. He found out while he was in Canada promoting his 2006 album, *Playing With Fire*.

I arrived at the studio and went through the typical routine with the producers. I braced myself for another day of repeating the same answers, but then a producer surprised me right before I went on air. They suddenly asked, ‘How do you feel about Britney filing for divorce?’ I was completely stunned and couldn’t think of what to say.

Kevin described the situation as incredibly upsetting, saying it left him feeling humiliated, angry, and heartbroken. He thinks Britney filed for divorce secretly because her publicists were worried about how it would look if she was the one being broken up with again, especially after her split with Justin Timberlake.

 

Before the widely publicized incident where Britney Spears shaved her head – which she explained was a reaction to being constantly judged for her appearance – her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, claimed she unexpectedly came to his home, repeatedly ringing the doorbell and speaking incoherently.

As Kevin explained in his book, she was really struggling, and it just wasn’t a safe situation for the kids. He worried they wouldn’t be able to process what was happening with their mom, seeing her so confused and out of sorts, and he desperately wanted to protect them from being frightened. It was a really tough decision, but he knew he had to keep them away.

I was so shocked when I heard about what happened with Britney. Apparently, she just spontaneously went to a local hair salon, a totally normal neighborhood place, and shaved her head. It was such a sudden and unexpected thing for her to do.

Kevin wrote that pictures from that time spread rapidly – showing her shaved head and a fierce expression. He explained that’s precisely the same intensity she’d displayed when she came to his gate.

Kevin wrote that “it was obvious” his ex favored their youngest son over their oldest.

The father explained that Preston felt left out because Jayden always seemed to get the most attention. He believed their mother loved both boys, but her behavior showed Jayden was her priority.

In turn, “Preston carried that pain for years,” according to Kevin.

He described how Preston continued to struggle with lingering effects from childhood, including night terrors, a constant need for reassurance, and feeling less loved than his brother. Even as Preston grew up and learned to express his emotions, those early experiences still left a mark.

Responding to Kevin’s memoir, Britney posted on X in October 2025, saying that relationships with teenage boys can be difficult. She explained she’s felt hurt by the situation, always wanting her sons to be involved in her life, but they’ve repeatedly seen her father’s disrespect towards her.

As the boys grew up, Kevin explained that they started sharing stories about Britney that revealed a pattern of her trying to control them and prevent them from being independent.

Kevin claimed Britney would take their son Jayden horseback riding, even though he was severely allergic to horses.

He explained that she kept giving Jayden shellfish, even though she knew he was allergic, dismissing the danger as unimportant. He also shared that Preston had once told him she physically assaulted him, punching him in the face.

Kevin claimed his former partner unexpectedly entered his house, describing her as having a torn shirt with one breast exposed.

He described how she held a single purple diaper – for Jayden, who hadn’t used diapers in over a year. Preston quickly ran to the basement to hide, while Britney walked in, took Jayden, and began to undress him on the couch.

Kevin said Britney left after the kids’ nanny stepped in.

 

Kevin wrote that Britney saw her sons often, but her life was always chaotic. He recalled one instance where the boys came home with severely bleached hair – not just highlights, but bleached all the way to their scalps, causing burns to their skin.

I was really struck by something Kevin shared in his book. He said that when Preston was around ten or eleven years old, he came to him, deeply upset and confused, asking why his mother was making him bathe with her. It was a heartbreaking thing to read, and it really highlighted the difficult situation Preston was growing up in.

He said it was obvious the person was uneasy. He explained that by the time the boys became teenagers, they had told him they no longer wanted to visit their mother’s home.

Kevin said Preston and Jayden eventually recorded “incidents” with Britney on their phones. 

He described one video showing Britney yelling at her son Preston because he refused to wear a specific shirt for an Instagram photo. He also mentioned another video, taken in the car, where she scolded Preston with harsh language, then switched to speaking to Jayden using a childish tone.

Kevin said Jayden had a video showing Britney applying lotion to his face while he was still waking up in the middle of the night.

Kevin said she filmed herself shouting at him, demanding respect, and angrily confronting him. He also explained that she frequently woke him up at night, either to have him come to her room for company or to watch movies together.

Kevin shared that the most disturbing story he heard was about Preston and Jayden waking up to find Britney supposedly standing in their doorway, silently watching them, and calmly saying, ‘Oh, you’re awake?’ while holding a knife.

Responding to claims made by Kevin, Britney posted on X in October 2025, stating, “Those small untruths in the book are benefiting someone financially, and I’m the one who’s really being harmed. I still care about my family, and people who truly know me won’t believe the negative stories about my well-being and struggles with alcohol.”

Kevin wrote that his mother’s visits always ended in arguments. His sons had simply had enough of the yelling and didn’t want to continue facing it.

Kevin explained that his sons seemed emotionally exhausted during that period, and as a result, their visits with Britney gradually decreased and eventually stopped.

After a particularly difficult visit, the boys told Kevin they refused to go back. Kevin noticed the immediate relief in the house; it was as if a heavy weight had been lifted, and they were no longer struggling to balance two different lives.

Kevin said the boys have grown up a lot and now understand their mom and what she’s going through better. They’ve also become more emotionally aware, learning how to handle situations by knowing when to get involved and when to give each other space.

That’s why he said they continue to stay off social media and live life out of the spotlight.

Kevin described his son Preston, age 20, as thoughtful, sensitive, and remarkably calm, with a talent for creativity and a passion for music. He also shared that Preston, now 20, has an incredibly close relationship with his 19-year-old brother, Jayden.

Preston is still living in Hawaii, where the family moved in 2023, but Jayden has returned to Los Angeles to pursue his passion for music, his father, Kevin, says.

Seeing them flourish and support each other has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m so proud of the people they’ve become.
