Fans ofwill be getting a brand-new series from a fan-favorite character’s point-of-view.
According to reports, Paul Zaentz, who is Saul Zaentz’s nephew and the original producer of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” has secured the rights to the story. Now, he aims to adapt it for television, focusing this time on Chief Bromden’s perspective, as expressed by Will Sampson’s character in the novel. In his statement, Zaentz mentioned that he recently signed an agreement with Ken Kesey’s widow, Faye Kesey, and family to develop a TV series. He continued, “For the first season, we will tell the story from Chief Bromden’s point of view. Afterward, we will explore what happens to him following his escape from the hospital.
Zaentz clarified that he has no intention of recreating iconic scenes from the movie merely for the sake of reintroducing them to a new audience. Over the past five decades, numerous requests have come in to remake the film, but he’s adamant that it wouldn’t be right if they just mimicked the original director’s work. He considers such an attempt disrespectful.
According to Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel titled the same, the movie tells a story where Jack Nicholson portrays Randle Patrick “R.P.” McMurphy, who is imprisoned for statutory rape and pretends to be mentally ill to avoid work in prison. After being transferred to a mental hospital, he faces the oppressive and cruel Nurse Ratched. Throughout the story, McMurphy fights against Nurse Ratched, ultimately leading to his demise. Meanwhile, Chief Bromden, played by Will Sampson, remains loyal to McMurphy and follows through on their plan to escape.
