So, remember how they were talking about turning *Horizon Zero Dawn* into a TV show? Well, it sounds like PlayStation Productions has actually switched gears again. I just read that Asad Qizilbash, the head of the studio, mentioned it’s back to being a movie! I found out through The Game Post – it was in a legal document Sony filed against Tencent over a different game, *Light of Motiram*, of all things.
Qizilbash announced that the script is finished and they’re now searching for a director. Sony hopes to start filming in 2026 and release the movie in 2027.
Qizilbash announced that a film based on the game *Horizon* is in the works with Columbia Pictures. They have a completed script and are currently looking for a director, aiming to begin filming in 2026 and release the movie in 2027. This project continues the successful partnership between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions, which previously brought *Uncharted* (2022) and *Gran Turismo* (2023) to the big screen.
Sony emphasized the significance of the *Horizon* franchise and its main character, Aloy, as central to the PlayStation brand with a statement from Qizilbash. He highlighted Aloy’s role as a central figure in the upcoming movie and described her as crucial for expanding the *Horizon* universe into a long-term franchise.
Back in April, Qizilbash mentioned that the Horizon adaptation was becoming a TV series. He explained that he wanted to make sure the adaptation was high quality, believing this would attract a larger audience.
Qizilbash believes Hollywood has realized that video game adaptations can be incredibly successful if executed well, and have the potential for large audiences. He’s noticed this shift significantly in the last five to six years, coinciding with the release of some quality adaptations. This realization also influenced the decision to develop the project as a TV series instead of a movie, as the initial creative direction wasn’t working as intended.
Sony initially revealed plans to create a Horizon series in January at CES 2025. Details were scarce at the time, except that it would be a partnership between PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures. Notably, Columbia Pictures also collaborated with Sony on the Uncharted movie.
I’m so excited to hear that PlayStation Productions is tackling a new *Resident Evil* movie! Apparently, they’re teaming up with Constantin Film to reboot the whole series. What’s really cool is they’ve got Shay Hatten, who wrote parts of *Army of the Dead* and *John Wick: Chapter 4*, helping with the script, and Zach Cregger – the guy who directed *Barbarian* – is not only co-writing but *directing* too! It’s a huge project, and from what I’ve heard, Netflix and Warner Bros. are already fighting over who gets to help make it happen.
