Horror is full of iconic villains like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger – characters who’ve rightfully earned their place in pop culture. However, there are other frightening figures who deserve just as much recognition, even though they aren’t as widely known. While horror fans might recognize them, these villains haven’t reached the mainstream popularity of characters like the Terminator or Jack Torrance, which is surprising considering how well-regarded the movies they appear in often are.
These characters are truly memorable and unsettling. While the film’s quality helps make them impactful, they are frightening even when considered individually.
10) Cooper from Night of the Living Dead
Night of the Living Dead is a groundbreaking horror film and a standout movie of the 1960s. Even now, it powerfully affects audiences with its shocking (for its time) violence and deeply sad ending. However, the real horror isn’t the zombies themselves—whose origins are a mystery—it’s the behavior of people.
Although the angry crowd at the end of *Night of the Living Dead* could potentially recognize Ben wasn’t a zombie (depending on how you interpret their actions), Harry Cooper truly embodies the flawed nature of humanity. He’s aggressive, rude, and believes he’s the most capable person in a crisis – but everyone else thinks he’s the *last* person who should be in charge. In fact, Cooper creates more tension throughout the film, perhaps even more than the zombies themselves.

9) Vincent & Ida Smith from Motel Hell
If you’re looking for a truly unsettling horror film that doesn’t get enough attention, check out *Motel Hell*. It shares a lot of similarities with *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre* – the characters Farmer Vincent Smith and his sister, Ida, are very much cut from the same cloth as the Sawyer family.
This group commits horrific acts of violence, burying people neck-deep, slitting their throats, and then using a tractor to kill them. They do this to ensure the meat from their victims remains high quality. It’s deeply disturbing and shows a complete lack of empathy. It raises serious questions about the kind of upbringing these individuals had.

8) Alex Hammond from Prom Night
Prom Night is a classic slasher film, ranking among the most well-known in the genre like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. However, it isn’t perfect – the first half of the movie is noticeably slow and uneventful.
The movie really picks up in the second half, building to a shocking reveal about the villain. He’s Alex Hammond, the brother of the main character, Kim (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), which is a major emotional blow. But the film also helps us understand his motives – he’s seeking revenge on the cruel kids who bullied his sister so badly that she fell from a window and died, and then never faced any consequences for their actions.

7) Slausen from Tourist Trap
Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles was the source of a famous running gag on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. But a different spelling – Slausen with an “e” – refers to a less funny, but still unsettling, killer in the movie Tourist Trap. Despite being creepy, this Slausen actually thinks his actions are amusing.
Slausen is a man with telekinetic powers and a split personality who abducts young people and controls them like puppets. While the premise sounds absurd, the film *Tourist Trap* is surprisingly unsettling, and Chuck Connors delivers a committed performance that makes it all genuinely effective.

6) Belial from Basket Case
The 1980s horror film *Basket Case* is wonderfully strange and probably best left untouched by modern remakes. The story centers around a young man who carries his separated twin brother, Belial – a grotesque, bumpy creature with teeth – around in a basket.
Belial’s motive for killing people – resentment towards those who estranged him from his brother – does make him a somewhat sympathetic character, despite his extreme violence. Combined with his striking appearance and the unusual way he’s transported (in a basket!), Belial is a truly memorable villain.

5) The Mountain Twins from Just Before Dawn
The horror film *Just Before Dawn* is like a slasher version of *Deliverance*, and it’s effective because much of the violence happens in broad daylight. Unfortunately, it’s not currently available to stream.
The characters known as “the mountain twins,” both played by John Hunsaker, are convincingly threatening, much like Leatherface. Their size and strength make you believe they could easily commit violence. What’s even more disturbing is that they laugh and smile while doing terrible things, making it clear they’re relishing the experience.
4) “Harry Warden” from My Bloody Valentine
Considered one of the best slasher films, *My Bloody Valentine* really should have launched a series. While it did get a remake in 2009, proving it hasn’t been totally overlooked, it’s arguably just as deserving of classic status as films like *Halloween* and *A Nightmare on Elm Street*.
The Miner, formerly Harry Warden and now going by Axel Palmer while impersonating Warden, is just as deserving of recognition as horror icons like Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger. The miner’s outfit itself is perfectly suited for a scary villain: a pickaxe makes a terrifying weapon, the dark suit allows him to blend into shadows, and the headlight can disorient and frighten victims. This “Harry Warden” persona is genuinely frightening. The reveal that he’s actually a disfigured man grown up seeking revenge for his father’s death makes the Miner a truly terrifying and memorable character.

3) Rawhead Rex from Rawhead Rex
The film *Rawhead Rex* closely follows the original short story by Clive Barker, found in *Books of Blood Volume 3*. Interestingly, Barker also wrote the movie’s script, but he ultimately disowned the film due to dissatisfaction with the director’s work.
For what it is – a classic, low-budget monster movie – *Rawhead Rex* is actually pretty fun. The monster doesn’t quite match the original descriptions, but that’s part of what makes it special. It looks like a bear-gorilla who quickly left the gym to try out for the band KISS! You won’t find that kind of creativity anywhere else.

2) Conal Cochran from Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Michael Myers, the killer from the *Halloween* movies, actually seems a little more ethical than the villain from *Halloween III*. While Michael did attempt to harm his niece, Jamie, he generally avoids killing children, unlike the villain in *Season of the Witch*.
Conal Cochran is a uniquely disturbing villain because his targets are almost exclusively children. Any adults who die are simply victims of the horrifying way he kills – snakes emerging from the skulls of the children he’s murdered. His plan involves mass murder, specifically targeting children wearing masks made by his company. He’s a truly reprehensible character. While Michael Myers is often seen as the face of the franchise, Cochran is arguably even more evil, and Dan O’Herlihy (known for his role in *RoboCop*) delivers a fantastic performance as him.

1) Cropsy from The Burning
The horror film *The Burning* is finally gaining recognition among slasher fans. It’s a suspenseful and violent movie, reminiscent of *Friday the 13th*, and features a cast of up-and-coming actors. The standout character is Cropsy, a camp caretaker who suffered terrible burns after being the victim of a cruel prank.
Cropsy, from the film *The Burning*, is a lot like Freddy Krueger, but it came out three years earlier. The special effects work on Cropsy’s disfigured face, created by Tom Savini, is incredibly unsettling. Despite all the makeup, the actor Lou David still managed to deliver a genuinely scary performance. And the use of garden shears as a weapon is a standout element of the early 1980s slasher genre – while other films have used them (like *Friday the 13th: A New Beginning*), Cropsy and *The Burning* really made them iconic.
