Quentin Tarantino’s Comic Book Crossover Officially Confirmed as a Movie, Combining Over 100 Years of Lore

Back in 2015, Quentin Tarantino and Matt Wagner created a comic book series called Django/Zorro, which brought together the characters of Jamie Foxx’s Django Unchained and the classic Zorro. While there was talk of turning this unique team-up into a movie in 2019, those plans were put on hold due to the pandemic. Now, the crossover is finally becoming a reality with a new film adaptation.

Sony Pictures is developing a new film based on Django/Zorro, according to Deadline. Academy Award-winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland (known for Mystic River and LA Confidential) is writing the script. While Quentin Tarantino won’t be directing, he has approved the project. Details are still scarce as the film is in its early stages, but it won’t be a straight adaptation of the comic books; Helgeland is crafting an original continuation of the story.

What is the Django/Zorro Comic About?

Originally published in 2015 by Dynamite Entertainment, this comic book is a direct sequel to the 2012 film Django Unchained. Set years after the movie’s events, Django/Zorro features an unexpected but exciting partnership between Django and Don Diego de la Vega, better known as Zorro. Together, they embark on a mission to liberate enslaved people from a cruel archduke who is oppressing the local community. This comic marked the first official continuation of any story from director Quentin Tarantino.

The movie will continue the story from the comics, introducing a new narrative while also expanding on the established universe. This is particularly exciting because it will draw from over a century of history and storytelling, potentially delivering both a compelling Django story and a fresh take on Zorro. Seeing Django team up with the legendary Zorro will also be fascinating, considering Zorro’s widespread popularity in entertainment.

It’s currently unknown whether Jamie Foxx will return as Django or if Antonio Banderas will reprise his role as Zorro. Banderas previously played the character Alejandro Murrieta, who took over the Zorro identity from Anthony Hopkins’ character in The Mask of Zorro, and a younger Zorro could fit well into a future story. For now, we’ll have to wait and see how this exciting collaboration between the bounty hunter and the swordsman develops.
