The new *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* game returns to the Kalos region and brings back Mega Evolution, a popular feature from *Pokemon X and Y*. This ability is key to the game’s story and lets players use their favorite Mega Evolved Pokemon again. In addition to the returning Mega Evolutions, *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* adds 26 brand-new ones! While some of the new designs, like those for Mega Dragonite and Mega Victreebel, might not appeal to everyone, there’s likely a Mega Evolution out there for every Pokemon fan.
Playing through *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, I experienced the reveal of each new Mega Evolution. The game cleverly introduces them gradually as you progress, encountering them while battling trainers and special Rogue Megas. The reveals keep coming right up to the end of the game! Now that I’ve finished *Pokemon Legends: Z-A*, I’m ready to share my personal ranking of these new designs, from least to most impressive.
26. Mega Barbaracle

Barbaracle really didn’t need extra arms that look like additional heads, but its Mega Evolution gave it exactly that. It’s a strange design choice, to say the least.
25. Mega Pyroar

They just made its mane bigger. It’s a meh from me.
24. Mega Dragonite
![]()
This design feels a little uninspired compared to others. It’s essentially the same old Dragonite, just with added wings and a longer tail. Other games in the *Legends: Z-A* series have more impressive Mega Evolutions.
23. Mega Victreebel
![]()
This design feels disturbing. Considering it’s a Rogue Mega Pokémon, it fits – the creature is supposed to be suffering, which motivates you to help it. However, as the trainer responsible for putting it in that state, I’d just feel guilty.
22. Mega Meganium
![]()
Honestly, the flower layers around its neck just look… uncomfortable! It feels like they tried to make it look strong, but it just comes off as a bit goofy. And it doesn’t really build on what I already liked about Meganium’s original design, which is a shame.
21. Mega Eternal Floette
![]()
The design of this Mega Evolution is disturbing, similar to why I dislike evolving Munna into Musharna – it reminds me too much of an umbilical cord, and I’m not a fan. Considering the story builds towards Floette finally Mega Evolving, this design just didn’t feel satisfying.
20. Mega Chesnaught
![]()
The design reminds me a bit of Digimon, and I actually don’t mind that! However, it mostly feels like a slightly upgraded version of Chesnaught. I wish they’d taken the design in a more original direction.
19. Mega Feraligatr
![]()
I didn’t choose Totodile as my first Pokémon, and seeing this one in battle just confirmed I made the right choice. Honestly, this new Mega Evolution isn’t very exciting – it’s nowhere near as impressive as Mega Dragonite. It mostly just gets a much larger scale on its hood, and that’s about it.
18. Mega Malamar
![]()
The Pokemon Company’s build-up to revealing Mega Malamar was really entertaining. However, this new design transforms an already creepy Pokemon into a full-blown supervillain. It’s genuinely scary, but I admire their dedication to the concept.
17. Mega Skarmory
![]()
The redesign gives Skarmory a polished, high-tech look, almost like a futuristic spaceship rather than a Pokémon. While something feels slightly unusual about it, it’s a really cool update that feels like a logical evolution for the character.
16. Mega Eelektross

I find Eelektross pretty unsettling, and Mega Eelektross is even more so. However, I do appreciate how they transformed its arms into what are essentially side cannons – it’s a really cool design choice.
15. Mega Excadrill

This Pokémon has hands shaped like drills, and they’ve been made even larger. I appreciate how it combines all the drills into one massive attack – it’s meant to be frightening! However, the sheer size of the metal parts doesn’t quite fit its body, making it look a little comical instead of truly intimidating.
14. Mega Greninja

Some fans were disappointed that this design felt like a simple flip of the original Greninja. However, the new color scheme on its limbs really emphasizes the ninja theme, and the water shuriken looks quite impressive.
13. Mega Zygarde

I already preferred the idea of Zygarde being a small, adorable creature, so I wasn’t thrilled with this new form. It feels like its massive, missile-like ability is only useful in very specific situations, making this Mega Evolution more about the narrative than practical gameplay.
12. Mega Emboar

While I’m not a huge fan of Emboar’s final form, its Mega Evolution is a big step up. The fiery cape and spear-like design transform it from a bulky, wrestling-inspired Pokémon into a powerful warrior.
11. Mega Dragalge

While it’s not my top choice, this Mega Evolution really captures the idea of Dragalge reaching its full potential, and I appreciate that.
10. Mega Starmie
![]()
It’s become popular online for a reason – it’s undeniably silly. But honestly, it’s the only time I’ve genuinely laughed during a Rogue Mega battle. And despite how strange it is, I actually enjoy it!
9. Mega Falinks
![]()
It’s difficult to make a Pokémon based on a line of smaller creatures *worse*, but this new design is surprisingly good. It has a cool, almost Transformers-like appearance, and I really like it.
8. Mega Scolipede
![]()
This is a definite improvement! The Scolipede Pokémon gains impressive armor, giving it the appearance of a battle-ready steed. It’s a strong design that truly feels like it deserves the ‘Mega’ title.
7. Mega Froslass
![]()
This Mega Evolution design is really cool! Froslass becomes more imposing, with a beautifully detailed dress, and the snowy effects around her skirt are fantastic. Despite losing to her in the Rogue Mega battle, I have to admit she looked amazing while doing it.
6. Mega Drampa
![]()
This version has a great new color scheme, and it really makes the dragon look much more powerful. While Drampa usually seems sleepy, this Mega Evolution looks like it’s prepared for battle. It’s a fantastic improvement!
5. Mega Scrafty
![]()
I really love the unique style of this character. What starts as a silly, oversized outfit unexpectedly pulls off a cool, emo look. The little spines on its forehead even resemble the classic emo ‘swoosh’ hairstyle – it’s clear the designers intentionally created this vibe and fully committed to it.
4. Mega Hawlucha
![]()
The design is fairly conservative, but it perfectly captures the wrestling theme. It feels like Hawlucha received a significant costume upgrade for a major match, and the gold and black color scheme makes it look much more imposing.
3. Mega Chandelure
![]()
This Mega Evolution makes Candelure, already a beautiful Pokémon, even more elaborate and detailed. I absolutely love it – a two-stage Candelure is fantastic!
2. Mega Delphox
![]()
I’m staying true to myself, and I absolutely love the idea of giving that mystical fox Pokémon a broom to fly with! The flames could look a little more realistic – they resemble puffy marshmallows right now – but overall, I give this design top marks.
1. Mega Clefable
![]()
Okay, so Clefable’s Mega Evolution? Seriously awesome. Those little wings actually *glow* now, which is a fantastic detail. And that bigger, fluffier head? It just feels like the perfect evolution of everything I love about Clefable. It really takes its Fairy-type charm to the next level, honestly.
