I know there are tons of new horror movies coming out for Halloween, but I have a yearly tradition: rewatching the *Twilight* films every fall. They’re a little cheesy at times – the wigs are famously bad! – but that’s part of what I love about them, especially since I grew up reading and watching them as a teenager. Recently, while rewatching, I started thinking about how Bella stays human for most of the series, and I actually wish she had become a vampire much earlier.
I understand the appeal of the unlikely romance between Bella and Edward, but after rewatching the series, it’s clear Bella quickly desires to become a vampire and be with Edward forever. I wish the movies had shown us more of Bella as a vampire, because we don’t get to see enough of that side of her. Let’s discuss this in more detail…
Edward Could Have Turned Bella In Twilight
I recently rewatched *Twilight* – it’s returning to theaters later this month along with the other films in the series. During the scene where James tricks Bella into going to the ballet studio, Edward faces a difficult choice: turn Bella into a vampire or remove the venom James injected into her. He manages to get the venom out, but it’s a struggle and he almost gives in to the urge to feed on her blood.
I’ve watched this part of the story so many times, but this time I kept thinking Bella should become a vampire! I know it leads to even more trouble for her in the later movies, and I appreciate that Edward and Bella waited until they were married to commit to being together forever – it’s how Renesmee was even possible. Still, it would have been really exciting to see Bella become a vampire in the first movie and face everything with her own powers. It might have also made Edward seem more relatable if he’d been forced to turn her, or if James had done it first, and he had to deal with the guilt and the joy of being with the vampire he loved.

Bella Often Feels Like A Passive Character Because She Can’t Defend Herself
A moment that always stands out to me in the *Twilight* series is when Bella transforms into a vampire at the end of *Breaking Dawn – Part 1*. It’s so satisfying because it’s what she’s been longing for throughout the entire story. She’s an ordinary girl thrown into an extraordinary world of vampires and werewolves, and instead of being scared, she’s immediately drawn to it and wants to belong. I think the series resonates with so many young women because it taps into the desire to feel special, loved forever, and have incredible power. It makes perfect sense to want to see her achieve that transformation quickly.
For much of *Twilight*, Bella desires to be more independent and take an active role in her relationship with Edward, but he consistently maintains control by ignoring her wishes and keeping her human. Kristen Stewart has even pointed out this imbalance in their dynamic. While it’s understandable that Edward doesn’t want to transform Bella into a vampire and potentially lose her as she is, the fact that the decision was ultimately made *for* her creates an unsettling power imbalance throughout the story.

I Would Have Loved To See Bella Navigate Being A Vampire Earlier On
In the *Twilight* saga, Bella doesn’t become a vampire until after graduating high school, following her marriage to Edward and the birth of their child. However, imagine how much more dramatic it would have been if she’d transformed during her senior year! Seeing Bella navigate high school as a vampire would have been incredibly entertaining and raised the stakes for viewers. It could have sparked new conflicts – perhaps with Jacob, his werewolf pack, or other vampires discovering a new vampire in town – without relying on the storylines of Bella’s despair over Edward leaving or Jacob developing feelings for their baby.
Instead of the story focusing on Edward protecting Bella from vampire threats, we’d see Bella develop her own vampire identity, navigating both the hidden and human worlds.

Edward And Bella Are A Lot Less Cringe Of A Couple When They Are Both Vampires
Thinking about how awkward Edward and Bella’s relationship could be, I always thought they were strongest as a couple *after* they both became vampires. Once Edward wasn’t constantly worried about hurting Bella, their connection felt much more genuine and romantic—especially because they chose to be together for eternity, even though they could have lived any life they wanted. It makes a lot more sense to me than Edward trying to push Bella away while simultaneously claiming he can’t live without her. That was just confusing!
I’ve watched these movies countless times, and I’m really excited about this new take on the story. It could even address some of my issues with the series as I’ve grown older. Still, the *Twilight* movies remain some of the best vampire films out there, and a big part of their appeal is that they are what they are. That being said, I couldn’t help but wonder what would have happened if Bella had turned into a vampire earlier.
