The *21 Jump Street* movies were a surprisingly great hit in the 2010s. Instead of just being another remake, they cleverly reinvented the original idea, poking fun at typical buddy cop comedies and Hollywood’s obsession with reboots. The first film did so well that a sequel, *22 Jump Street*, was quickly made. For years, people have tried to get a third movie going, but it hasn’t happened. Now, according to star Channing Tatum, it seems unlikely we’ll ever see a *23 Jump Street*.
Channing Tatum recently told *Variety* that a third *Jump Street* movie is unlikely. He explained that the high number of producers involved would make the production costs incredibly high – potentially even exceeding the film’s budget. He described the situation as unsustainable, saying the project is ‘too top-heavy’ and would likely collapse under the weight of its own structure.
Is It Too Late for 23 Jump Street To Happen?
Following the success of *22 Jump Street*, several ideas were floated for continuing the series, including a spin-off with a female lead and a crossover with *Men in Black* featuring Schmidt and Jenko. It’s disappointing to hear Channing Tatum express doubt about a *23 Jump Street* movie, as these potential sequels could have been fun and brought something new to the franchise. However, some argue that ending the series with two films might actually be the best approach.
The ending of *22 Jump Street* famously joked about studios making too many sequels, and it’s been a while since that movie came out. Recent attempts to revive old comedies after many years have been hit-or-miss creatively – it’s hard to make them as good as the originals. It would be disappointing if a new *Jump Street* movie didn’t live up to what fans remember. In some ways, the ending of *22 Jump Street* felt like a perfect conclusion to the series, leaving it on a strong note.
However, *Jump Street* might be different. A third *Jump Street* movie, *23 Jump Street*, probably wouldn’t happen unless Phil Lord and Chris Miller were involved – they directed the first two films. Lord and Miller are still highly successful, as demonstrated by their work on the popular and critically praised *Spider-Verse* series. Their next film, *Project Hail Mary*, is looking like a major release next year. They have a knack for turning questionable concepts into hits, so if the practical challenges could be overcome, they’d likely be able to come up with a compelling story for *23 Jump Street*.
Since *22 Jump Street* hit theaters, Hollywood’s been obsessed with revisiting old favorites – we’ve seen continuations of *Star Wars*, *Jurassic Park*, and even *Top Gun* decades later. And considering the *Jump Street* movies were already so self-aware, constantly poking fun at movie clichés, a sequel that lampoons *legacy sequels* themselves could be hilarious. But it would be a tricky tightrope walk. The humor in *Jump Street* is great, but it could easily get stale if they just keep making them. Honestly, *23 Jump Street* should only happen if the filmmakers have a genuinely brilliant idea – we need a high-quality movie, not just another rehash.
