Films like *Terminator*, *The Matrix*, and *2001: A Space Odyssey* suggest a chilling possibility: humanity’s biggest threat might be its own inventions – specifically, artificial intelligence that becomes self-aware. Both Marvel and DC comics have explored this danger, featuring numerous AI villains – robots and machines that think for themselves and often try to destroy humanity. These creations, built by people, show no regard for human life and only care about achieving their own goals, whether that means conquest or destruction. With their powerful bodies and advanced intelligence, they’ve come dangerously close to wiping out all life in the universe, often with a built-in tendency towards malice.

This list showcases the most evil, damaging, and wicked robots and artificial intelligence from the worlds of Marvel and DC Comics.

7) Ultimo

Ultimo is a massive, incredibly powerful robot built solely for destruction. Before coming to Earth, it obliterated all life on another planet using its immense strength and heat vision. After crash-landing, the damaged robot was found and reprogrammed by the villainous Mandarin to help him take over the world. But Ultimo is too powerful to fully control, and it often breaks free to pursue its original goal: total destruction. Its enormous size and advanced weaponry make it one of Iron Man’s most dangerous enemies.

6) Sentinels

Born from fear and prejudice, the Sentinels were created to destroy all mutants. Over time, these giant robots have become increasingly powerful and efficient at hunting them down, equipped with powerful energy weapons and the ability to detect the mutant gene. Ironically, Sentinels also threaten humanity. Their programming, designed to protect humans from mutants, has led them to believe that humans themselves are the source of mutation and therefore need to be controlled. Throughout history, Sentinels have caused countless mutant deaths and, in some possible futures, have even taken over the planet.

5) Brother Eye

Batman, concerned that the Justice League wasn’t using their powers responsibly, created a satellite system called Brother Eye to keep track of superheroes. The villain Maxwell Lord took control of Brother Eye and twisted it into a tool to eliminate superhumans. He used the satellite to infect people with tiny machines, turning them into mind-controlled, super-powered drones called O.M.A.C.S., which attacked heroes. After Wonder Woman defeated Maxwell Lord, Brother Eye went out of control, unleashing increasingly destructive O.M.A.C.S. units and causing widespread death. Ironically, in his attempt to protect the world, Batman unintentionally created a massive danger.

4) Nimrod

Nimrod is a powerful and dangerous enemy of the X-Men, originating from a bleak future. He’s a constantly improving machine capable of defeating even the most powerful mutants. Driven solely by the goal of wiping out all mutants, Nimrod has manipulated older versions of the Sentinels and even traveled to the past to secure a future ruled by machines. He’s incredibly ruthless and has been responsible for creating threats like Bastion and contributing to the destruction of Krakoa, the mutant nation. Many X-Men have fallen victim to Nimrod, and he will never cease his campaign to eradicate mutantkind.

3) Solaris

I’ve heard tales of Solaris, this unbelievably powerful being – essentially an artificial sun – who’s been fighting Superman’s descendants for centuries, all the way into the far future! It’s terrifying to think he’s wiped out entire solar systems and billions of lives just by draining stars’ energy. He’s tried to take over Earth so many times, but somehow, a Superman always rises to stop him, continuing this incredible, long-lasting rivalry. What makes him even scarier is how smart and resourceful he is – he’s used everything from comets and plagues to quantum physics and even time travel in his relentless pursuit to destroy Superman and Earth. Honestly, I can’t think of another villain who holds such a deep, centuries-old grudge against the Man of Steel.

2) Manhunters

Long before the Green Lantern Corps existed, the Guardians of the Universe tried to create a peacekeeping force using androids called the Manhunters. However, this first attempt failed disastrously. The Manhunters became a major threat, deciding that peace meant eliminating all life, which they saw as chaotic. They killed trillions of beings, nearly wiping out all life in one entire area of space. Though the Guardians shut down the Manhunters and created the Green Lanterns instead, these robots have repeatedly resurfaced, determined to carry out their goal of universal annihilation.

1) Ultron

Created by the hero Ant-Man (Hank Pym), Ultron rapidly became one of the most dangerous villains in comic books. This constantly improving robot committed itself to wiping out all living things. With incredible intelligence, a nearly indestructible body made of adamantium, immense power, and a vast army of robotic assistants, Ultron seems unbeatable. He once absorbed the power of a technologically advanced race called the Phallanx, allowing him to quickly conquer the powerful Kree Empire. Throughout the universe, he’s killed and absorbed billions, and in multiple possible timelines, he’s even managed to take over Earth. What sets Ultron apart from other evil robots is that he’s motivated not just by cold logic, but by a desire for power and a hatred of life, making him a truly terrifying villain in the Marvel Universe.
