Despite losing screens and showing on 612 fewer theaters this weekend compared to last, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning saw only a minimal drop of around 21%, earning an additional $3.28 million domestically. Moreover, it surpassed the domestic total of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’s two weeks ago and has now outgrossed that movie’s worldwide earnings. As reported by Box Office Mojo, Dead Reckoning finished its box office run with a total of $571,125,435 globally. Currently, The Final Reckoning stands at $576,184,000, with $191 million coming from domestic theaters and $385 million from international cinemas.
As of now, “The Final Reckoning” has a couple of weeks left in its run, but the upcoming release of “Superman” is expected to push it out of many more cinemas. Can it match the $398.5 million international box office earnings of “Dead Reckoning”? It’s not impossible, but it will be quite challenging.
Let’s bear in mind as well that The Final Reckoning is among the costliest films ever produced, boasting a budget exceeding an estimated $400 million. However, considering Dead Reckoning suffered the box-office blow of the four-quadrant event known as Barbenheimer (with both Barbie and Oppenheimer debuting on Dead Reckoning’s second weekend), its lackluster performance did raise some questions about The Final Reckoning’s potential failure. Notably, this final Ethan Hunt adventure continues the storylines introduced in that film.
It’s good to note that the initial opening of “The Final Reckoning” was decent, but not extraordinary with a revenue of approximately $64 million over its first weekend (around $79 million when considering Memorial Day). However, since then, the film has shown remarkable staying power, as evidenced by its second weekend’s drop of about 57.5%, or $27.2 million, which was not impressive but followed by smaller drops in subsequent weeks.
In its third through sixth weekends on home screens, the movie saw only modest declines in earnings: a decrease of about 45.5% (or $14.8 million) in its third weekend, a slight drop of 28.8% (earning an additional $10.5 million) in its fourth weekend, and a smaller decline of 38.8% (adding another $6.5 million to its total) in its fifth weekend. The sixth weekend saw a drop of 35.6%, earning it an additional $4.1 million. This week, the movie experienced a minor decrease of approximately 21.1%.
Given that the film has been experiencing decreased screenings since its third weekend, these declines are probably sufficient to bring joy to the team at Paramount Pictures. Moreover, this kind of movie is likely to perform well among home viewers who prefer not to spend nearly three and a half hours at a theater (taking previews into account).
Currently, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is only available in movie theaters. A digital rental date hasn’t been specified yet, but it might become available sometime before the end of July. As for its release on Paramount+, it seems reasonable to anticipate it around August.
