7 Actors Who Only Made One Truly Great Movie

Being an actor takes a lot of dedication and skill. While getting paid is a nice benefit, it’s not the sole reason people choose this profession. Delivering a convincing performance is a craft that requires memorizing lines and truly understanding the character. However, even with hard work, an actor can’t control the final result. Filmmaking involves so many different creative roles – writing, directing, editing, and music – that even strong acting can sometimes get lost in the process. Too many people contribute, and not everything can shine.

It’s tough for an actor when their best performance is stuck in a poorly made film, but it’s even worse when it keeps happening. Some Hollywood actors just seem unlucky. Here’s a look at seven performers who only have one genuinely great movie to their name.

7) Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry, similar to Adam Sandler, is mostly known for comedy, especially his movies featuring the character Madea, who is based on his mother and aunt. While these films are often humorous, they aren’t typically considered critically acclaimed, which presents a challenge for Perry. The one movie where he’s widely praised for his acting is *Gone Girl*, where he plays a straightforward defense attorney.

6) Marlon Wayans

Marlon Wayans is a comedy icon, much like Tyler Perry. His work on the *Scary Movie* series alone is worthy of a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. While the humor in those films isn’t universally appreciated, most of his other movies share a similar style. Luckily, Wayans also has the powerful drama *Requiem for a Dream* on his resume, which allowed him to showcase his serious acting talent in a film dealing with the difficult topic of drug addiction.

5) Stephen Baldwin

It’s likely challenging for Stephen Baldwin to forge his own path as the youngest of the Baldwin brothers, particularly when competing for acting roles. While he’s appeared in several films, he’s best known for his part in the 1996 thriller, *The Usual Suspects*. This film, directed by Bryan Singer, is famous for its incredible plot twist and continues to be discussed by movie fans even three decades later.

4) Kevin James

Being in an Adam Sandler movie seems like a blast – they’re usually filled with funny characters enjoying themselves amidst crazy situations. However, those roles don’t typically lead to awards or critical acclaim. Interestingly, Kevin James’ best-reviewed film isn’t a comedy with Sandler at all; it’s the animated movie *Monster House*, a captivating story about a haunted house that comes to life.

3) Hayden Christensen

The Star Wars prequels weren’t kind to Hayden Christensen. The writing was awkward, and despite his efforts, Anakin Skywalker’s descent into darkness didn’t feel believable. It’s easy to overlook Christensen’s range because of that role, but he’s acted in many other projects. One of his best performances is in *Shattered Glass*, a movie based on the true story of journalist Stephen Glass’s scandal.

2) Katherine Heigl

I’ve noticed a lot of actors happily settle into long TV runs, but Katherine Heigl definitely used Grey’s Anatomy as a launchpad for film. She’s been in some critically acclaimed movies, but if you ask me, Knocked Up is the one she really knocked out of the park. It’s a Judd Apatow comedy where she plays Allison Scott, and the premise – getting pregnant after a one-night stand with a bit of a slacker – throws her life into total chaos. It’s a really compelling role, and I think she shines in it.

1) Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba is a well-known actress, but her movies haven’t always been a hit with critics or audiences. One film that consistently receives praise is *Sin City*, which is based on the famous comic book by Frank Miller. Adapting Miller’s work for the screen is challenging, and Alba and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job.
