Prime Apologizes for Summer I Turned Pretty Meme Mocking Woman’s Ring

The time Prime Video turned pretty regretful.

Amazon Prime Video apologized to a user on X after someone from the streaming service made a joke about the size of her engagement ring, comparing it to the smaller ring featured in season three of The Summer I Turned Pretty. The comment referenced a ring given by Jeremiah (played by Gavin Casalegno) to Belly (played by Lola Tung).

Prime Video India acknowledged that a recent tweet caused offense, and they sincerely apologize. The tweet has been removed, and the team is working to make sure all future content aligns with their commitment to inclusivity. They promise to improve going forward.

The streaming service apologized three days after initially responding to a user named Savannah, who shared a photo of her emerald engagement ring. Their first message playfully asked if Savannah’s fiancé looked like a character from their show, The Summer I Turned Pretty, and included a picture of him holding up a ring similar to the famously small diamond from the series. This was a reference to the many memes created about the ring’s size over the past few months.

On October 18th, a social media user criticized a streaming platform for posting a deliberately unkind tweet about a personal happy moment, which they felt encouraged online harassment.

Regardless of the company’s mocking post, Savannahshared that she’s perfectly happy with her ring.

She explained that most of her posts only receive around twenty likes, so the attention her recent post about a personal moment was getting – especially the negative and critical comments – felt like too much. She added, “Remember that I’m a real person, and I genuinely love my ring and am very happy.”

The third season of the show sparked a lot of online conversation, but unfortunately, it also brought a wave of negativity, even directed at the actors themselves.

Gavin faced backlash for his character’s behavior, especially when Jeremiah cheated on Belly and then proposed to her, seemingly hoping she’d forgive him. He addressed these concerns publicly back in August.

Gavin emphasized to The New York Times that the story is a work of fiction and doesn’t represent his own experiences.

The official X account for The Summer I Turned Pretty even posted about the issue, asking fans to “keep the conversation kind this summer.”

According to a post in July, we strictly prohibit bullying and hate speech. Anyone who participates in these behaviors will be banned.

Okay, so like, the new season, We’ll Always Have Summer, starts with Belly – Lola Tung, she’s AMAZING – finishing up freshman year at Finch. But here’s the thing that totally threw me: it actually happens at the end of her junior year! It’s a little confusing, but honestly, anything with Belly is gold, so I’m just going with it!

Okay, so I’ve been tracking everything, and it’s four years! Four whole years that Jeremiah and Belly have been together before that happens – before he does that awful thing with Lacie! I’ve rewatched it so many times, and it’s not two years like some people are saying, it’s definitely four! It just makes the betrayal even worse, honestly, knowing how long they’d been a couple.

Right at the start of the new season, before even entering her dorm, Belly’s brother Steven (Sean Kaufman) playfully covers up her full name, Isabel, on the door, writing just “Belly” instead. Later, her new college friend, Anika Johnson (Sofia Bryant), continues to call her by that nickname.

However, in the book, Belly didn’t correct anyone who called her by her government name.

She explained in her book that she didn’t intentionally choose the name Isabel; it simply came about naturally. She recalled a specific moment when she noticed the name: ‘I remember struggling with my key, then looking up and seeing ‘Isabel’ spelled out in sparkly, stick-on rhinestones on the door.’

She told her roommate, Jillian Chapel, that her name was Isabel, and that’s what everyone at Finch College began calling her.

Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, the first book in a series that Netflix later turned into a movie, came out three years after We’ll Always Have Summer. However, the series included subtle references to the earlier book as a nod to fans.

Belly showed her love for the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before movies by displaying a photo of herself and Jeremiah dressed as the characters Peter Kavinsky and Lara Jean on her dorm wall. The sequel, P.S. I Still Love You, even appeared as an answer in a crossword puzzle Conrad Fisher (Chris Briney) and Belly worked on together during Christmas.

During the first season of the show, viewers started to see Conrad dealing with anxiety and panic attacks as he struggled to cope with the news that his mother, Susannah Fisher (played by Rachel Blanchard), had been diagnosed with cancer again.

By the third week, the Stanford student was meeting with a therapist as he prepared to go back to Cousins Beach for a memorial dedicated to Susannah. They talked about his worries about attending, though he didn’t discuss the issues with his relationships. The important thing is he’s going, at least.

Belly found out she’d been accepted into a study abroad program in Paris for the next semester, which unfortunately meant she wouldn’t be able to live with her friend Anika in the fall. This happened before Jeremiah had even asked her to marry him.

But in the book, she alters her plans to move because she gets engaged unexpectedly. Anika is understanding about it, telling Belly in a text message, “I’m not upset. It’s just disappointing we won’t be living together, but I’ll make it work.”

Although Taylor Jewel (played by Rain Spencer) and Steven’s relationship isn’t a major focus in the books, it develops into a significant subplot in the current season of the show. Despite Taylor being in a relationship with Davis and Steven dating Mia, they’ve been secretly having an affair since reconnecting during spring break in Manhattan – the same week Jeramiah was unfaithful to Belly.

While driving, Steven confessed to Taylor that he’d ended things with Mia, hoping they could try dating again. This news was too much for Taylor, and she asked him to stop the car. As she stepped out, Steven was hit by another vehicle while turning around, resulting in a medically induced coma. Fortunately, he fully recovered.

Although the same can’t be said for their relationship—at least at this point in the season.

Belly accepted a marriage proposal from Jeremiah, even though he had been unfaithful to her during spring break. Their relationship was notably unhealthy and overly reliant on each other.

I’ll never forget the look on his face when he proposed, as described in chapter 10. It was so full of determination and sincerity. I really knew him, probably better than anyone else at that point… I even felt like I knew his face better than my own! I’d spent countless hours just watching him sleep, gently tracing the line of his cheek with my finger. It was a look I’ll cherish forever.

She explained she never wanted to find an unexplained injury on his face, wanting to have shared every experience with him. She simply loved looking at him – his face meant everything to her.

Throughout the story, it’s revealed that her choice is also an attempt to deny her feelings for Conrad, a parallel that’s mirrored in the television series.

Jeremiah’s dishonesty was ultimately what led him to propose to Belly. She confessed to Taylor that Steven’s accident made her realize life is fleeting. However, it’s evident she was also trying to avoid confronting her true feelings for Conrad.

Taylor’s mother, Lucinda (played by Kristen Connolly), doesn’t have a large presence in the original book. However, her financial difficulties become important in the Amazon series, impacting the complicated relationship between Taylor and Steven. Steven discovers Lucinda’s hair salon is losing money after she tries to get him and Taylor back together.

Even though Taylor had ended things with Steven, she wouldn’t accept any further help from him. Instead, she teamed up with Lucinda to reduce expenses and eliminate her debt. This difficult situation also explains why Taylor struggled to ask for support from others, including Steven.

As a lifestyle expert, I always say timing is everything, and Jeremiah’s story really highlights that! When he and Belly first got together, he was still a junior in school, so he didn’t have the stress of graduating hanging over him. But later, he found out he was going to be delayed in finishing school, which actually played a big role in Belly’s decision not to study abroad in Paris. It added a whole new layer of complexity to their relationship and her plans.

Now that Lucinda was more involved in the show, she and Laurel’s daughter went dress shopping for Belly and organized her bridal shower, as Laurel didn’t support the wedding.

The show introduces Kayleigh as Adam Fisher’s secretary and the woman he has an affair with while his wife, Susannah, is battling cancer, adding a complicated romantic subplot. In the original book, Jeremiah and Conrad’s father also has a secretary, Denise Colletti, who handles wedding planning, but their relationship remains professional.

In the book, Belly’s parents, Laurel and John (played by Colin Ferguson), had a clear and separate coparenting relationship. However, the TV series took a different turn in season three: after attending a literary conference and having some wine, they ended up having a romantic encounter.

After Steven’s car accident in episode two, Laurel and John didn’t notice Belly’s worried calls. This left them feeling incredibly guilty about their impulsive night together.

After a period of disagreement, including some arguments and John missing a memorial service for Susannah, he and Belly started reconnecting. This was evident when Belly couldn’t make it home for Thanksgiving, but a video call with Laurel revealed that she and John were spending the holiday together.

Before Belly’s wedding, Taylor revealed that Conrad was the one who persuaded Laurel to attend.

In chapter 44, she shared with her best friend, as they were drifting off to sleep, that Conrad had spoken to her mother. He’d managed to get her to agree to come to the bridal shower, and the news had spread through their mothers – from her mom to this person’s mom, and finally to her.

During the show, Belly suddenly understands that Conrad secretly helped her, which makes her feel very confused while dancing. She’d recently had an edible at her bachelorette party, and while on the dance floor, she kept replaying cherished memories of them together to the song “we can’t be friends.”

Belly originally planned to study abroad in Paris but missed the application deadline when she decided to stay with Jeremiah. After they broke up, she finally spent a year in Paris, taking classes online, making friends, and even had a brief romance with someone named Benito.

The show explored Belly’s study abroad experience in France much more thoroughly than it did her time in Spain, which was only briefly shown through a letter from Conrad. While Spain was just a quick mention, France got three full episodes of focus.

For Jenny, expanding on Belly’s time away from her family was needed for the character arc.

Fans will be surprised by how much of the Paris scenes and the story’s conclusion we’re revealing,” Jenny shared with Entertainment Weekly in September. “It’s more than just a quick wrap-up after the main story ends.

You know, as I spent more time in Paris, I just kept finding myself adding layers to the script. It’s because living on your own, especially for the first time in a completely new country, is such a huge experience! And that’s really central to Belly’s journey as she matures – I wanted to make sure that feeling of independence and self-discovery really came through.
