Star Wars Favorite Confirms Disney Cancelled Plans for a Surprise Movie, But Fans Still Want This Character’s Story Told

News about how profitable the recent Star Wars films have been for Disney spread quickly online, but one of the franchise’s lead actors has surprisingly revealed that Disney turned down a spin-off movie that could have earned them a huge amount of money. There’s a long list of Star Wars projects that were canceled or never made, including ideas centered around popular characters like Jabba the Hutt and Boba Fett. Previously, Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron was considered the biggest lost opportunity, but now Adam Driver has shared details about another project that could have been a major success.

Adam Driver recently told the Associated Press that he and director Steven Soderbergh spent two years creating a script for a Star Wars spin-off movie, but Disney ultimately decided not to make it. Driver, best known for playing Kylo Ren, described the script as “one of the coolest I’ve ever been involved with,” and expressed his disappointment that it won’t be produced.

Why Star Wars’ Kylo Ren Movie Was Canceled

In a surprising decision, much like Sean Connery famously rejecting the role of Gandalf due to confusion, Disney declined the project because Bob Iger and Alan Bergman didn’t fully grasp the concept. This came just a few years after the unexpected return of Palpatine, which seemed equally baffling.

We pitched a story idea to Lucasfilm, and they were enthusiastic about it – they really got what we were trying to achieve. However, when we presented it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, they rejected it. They couldn’t accept the premise that Ben Solo was still alive, and that ended the project. It was called ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ and it was a great concept, but since it’s been cancelled, I can finally share details about it.

It appears the project is unlikely to be revived, unless something unexpected happens with Disney’s leadership. This is disappointing, especially since Adam Driver was enthusiastic about returning as Kylo Ren. He’d been discussing a potential return since 2021 and told Kathleen Kennedy he’d be on board with a strong director and compelling story, as he really enjoyed the character. Director Steven Soderbergh expressed his own regret, saying he enjoyed envisioning the film and was saddened fans wouldn’t get to see it.

It’s truly disappointing to see what could have been. Understandably, fans of Kylo Ren are upset, and one comment perfectly captures the feeling of regret.

This infuriates me more than anything has in a very long time.

Disney is eager to avoid any bad publicity surrounding Star Wars, especially as they begin a new chapter. However, the potential excitement from a project focused on Kylo Ren is significant. Many fans are passionate about the character and are likely to voice their disappointment now that it won’t happen. Kylo Ren—or Ben Solo—was a highlight of the recent Star Wars films, and exploring his internal struggles more fully, as was hinted at in The Rise of Skywalker, could have addressed a major criticism of the trilogy’s conclusion.
