2025 was a fantastic year for horror movies. Original stories led the way at the box office, most notably Ryan Coogler’s vampire film, Sinners, which became a huge hit, earning $367 million worldwide. Zach Cregger’s mystery thriller, Weapons, also performed exceptionally well, bringing in $267 million and proving that audiences crave original horror. Existing franchises had mixed fortunes: Final Destination: Bloodlines successfully revived the series with $314.9 million, while The Conjuring: Last Rites ended the main story arc with a strong performance, even though critics weren’t entirely convinced.
Despite a generally strong year for horror, 2025 also showed how easily things can go wrong, with several big movies failing to find an audience. The reboot of Wolf Man, directed by Leigh Whannell, was a particular disappointment, receiving criticism for its confusing plot and lack of scares, which led to poor ticket sales. Some horror fans also seemed tired of the same old formulas, and the latest V/H/S/Beyond film received mixed reviews. Even movies based on Stephen King stories had an uneven year – while The Long Walk was praised for its acting, it wasn’t a huge box office hit. However, there are still several exciting horror films coming out before the end of the year that could finish 2025 strongly.
5) Anaconda

Release Date: December 25th
The classic 90s horror film Anaconda is getting a new, funny makeover. This time around, Paul Rudd and Jack Black play two friends having a midlife crisis who decide to remake their favorite movie from when they were kids. Their low-budget film shoot takes them to the Amazon rainforest, where they quickly encounter a terrifyingly real and enormous snake. Directed by Tom Gormican, who previously made The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, the new Anaconda blends horror and comedy, leaning into the original film’s over-the-top style. Whether the movie works will depend on Gormican’s skill at mixing playful satire with genuine scares.
4) Shelby Oaks

Release Date: October 24th
This Halloween, get ready for Shelby Oaks, a new horror film that started as a popular online marketing campaign. The movie follows a woman’s search for her missing sister, who disappeared while being investigated by a group of paranormal YouTubers called the “Paranormal Paranoids.” Directed by Chris Stuckmann, a well-known online creator, Shelby Oaks has been getting great reviews for its suspenseful atmosphere and realistic acting. Distributed by Neon, the film explores the dark side of seeking online fame and could be a fresh take on the found-footage horror style, appealing to a new audience.
3) Dust Bunny

Release Date: December 12th
As a huge fan of Bryan Fuller’s work – I absolutely loved Hannibal and Pushing Daisies – I’m incredibly excited about his new film, Dust Bunny. It’s being described as a fantastical horror-thriller, and from what I’ve heard, it’s not your typical scary movie. The story follows a ten-year-old girl, Sophie Sloan, who witnesses something horrific – a monster eating her family! – and teams up with her enigmatic hitman neighbor to track it down. With Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver starring, and Fuller’s signature visual flair, it sounds like a brilliantly imaginative take on how children deal with trauma. It promises to be a really unique and captivating experience, something truly different in the horror genre.
2) Silent Night, Deadly Night

Release Date: December 12th
A remake of the notorious 1984 horror film Silent Night, Deadly Night is coming, aiming to capture the spirit of the original while offering a new take for today’s audiences. Directed by Mike P. Nelson, who previously rebooted Wrong Turn, the film revisits the story of Billy Chapman, a young man haunted by witnessing his parents’ murder at the hands of a Santa Claus-clad killer. Each Christmas, Billy takes on the Santa suit himself, delivering a violent form of revenge. Starring Rohan Campbell (known from Halloween Ends), the movie promises plenty of bloodshed and maintains the original’s dark and edgy sense of humor. Nelson has a knack for updating classic horror concepts without softening their impact, and this project allows him to explore the deep psychological trauma driving Billy’s Christmas-themed killing spree.
1) Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

Release Date: December 5th
After the huge success of the first movie, the sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s is the most eagerly awaited horror film of the year. The new film will continue the story of Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson) and the haunted animatronics at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, likely taking much of its plot from the second video game. This could introduce beloved characters like The Puppet and the frightening “Withered Animatronics,” adding to the creepy backstory of Fazbear Entertainment. With returning stars Matthew Lillard and Josh Hutcherson, and director Emma Tammi back in charge, the film aims to build on the suspenseful atmosphere that made the first movie so popular and profitable. Considering the large and dedicated fanbase and the promise of an even scarier story, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is expected to be a major hit and a chilling way to end the year for horror fans.
