Ryan Coogler, known for directing the Marvel film Black Panther and the upcoming vampire movie Sinners, has shared an update on the long-planned reboot of the classic ’90s sci-fi show, The X-Files. The reboot was initially announced with Coogler as a producer, but details have been scarce until recently. While he couldn’t share many specifics about his vision, Coogler did explain his reasons for revisiting the series – a reboot that will be challenging given the original’s popularity and impact.
According to Variety, Ryan Coogler is reviving the show as a personal project for his mother, who is a dedicated X-Files fan and was among the first to read his plans for the reboot. He shared this information with the audience at a Cinespia screening of Sinners.
You know, like how I bonded with my dad over the Rocky movies, The X-Files is something really special to me and my mom. She means everything to me – she’s actually here tonight, which is amazing – so getting this right is a huge deal for me. I really want to make her, and all the fans, proud. She’s even read some of my work on it, and she’s so excited!
Everyone’s eager to find out who will play the lead roles in the new series. Fox’s The X-Files was famous for the incredible connection between agents Mulder and Scully, and their dynamic kept viewers hooked for years. It’s currently unclear if the reboot will feature new actors in those roles or follow a path that continues the original story with familiar faces. Director Ryan Coogler was recently asked about rumors that Danielle Deadwyler might be involved, but he remained tight-lipped, simply saying he couldn’t confirm or deny anything. That definitely has our attention!
Will Anyone From the Original ‘X-Files’ Series Return in the Reboot?

Earlier this year, Ryan Coogler announced he was developing a reboot of The X-Files, expressing his long-held enthusiasm and desire to make it genuinely frightening. He’s also been asked about the possibility of Gillian Anderson reprising her role as Dana Scully, and he hopes she will return. Coogler is committed to creating something exceptional for both longtime fans and a new audience.
The actor has previously mentioned being open to reprising her role. While she did appear in the recent revival, any new series from Coogler would probably focus on different characters. However, there’s still a possibility she could be involved, as she’s said she’d like to work with the director of Sinners.
If Ryan Coogler were to revive The X-Files, I’d definitely consider reprising my role as Scully, working with him again. I’m open to returning if the opportunity feels right and the timing is good – that’s what I’ve said. He’s a truly talented director.
