Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Super Mario, recently discussed Nintendo’s increasing focus on making movies. He stated that Nintendo intends to create more films, but his statements led to some online debate and misunderstanding.
Nintendo producer Shigeru Miyamoto, in a Kyodo News report, explained that while video games become outdated with new releases, movies can be enjoyed for years to come. This statement sparked a lot of discussion online.
Several users, including Erasu on Bluesky, noticed the quote was actually a mistranslation. It came from an interview Miyamoto did with NDW about the upcoming Nintendo Museum, and it incorrectly combined two different parts of his conversation.

Miyamoto initially discussed Nintendo’s plans to broaden its popular franchises beyond just video games. He also highlighted the forthcoming Nintendo Museum, which will offer fans a chance to experience the company’s classic gaming consoles. Here’s the complete statement Miyamoto made:
Miyamoto explained that they chose to showcase Nintendo’s popular franchises – its IPs – because they felt it was the best way to give people a complete understanding of the company. They designed the museum to be an introduction, hoping it would reconnect people with Nintendo games. He added that while games eventually get replaced by newer versions, it’s the franchises themselves that people truly remember, and it’s sad to see games become outdated.
Many online misinterpreted Miyamoto’s comments, thinking he was complaining about how hard old games are to play. However, he was actually discussing how well Nintendo’s games have held up over time, and the enduring popularity of those franchises, not the games’ difficulty.
