Konami has been successfully reviving the Silent Hill series with its recent games. Series producer Motoi Okamoto recently explained that the company announced three new Silent Hill projects simultaneously to demonstrate their dedication to the franchise and its return, as reported by Automaton Media.
Konami didn’t just want to cautiously test interest in a potential Silent Hill return with one game or remake. They’re fully committed to bringing the franchise back with both a remake of an older title and a brand new game.
Back in 2022, we revealed three Silent Hill projects – Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f, and Silent Hill: Townfall, explained Okamoto. We didn’t want to cautiously start with just one remake. Instead, we aimed to demonstrate our strong dedication to bringing the series back. While developing a remake and a completely new game at the same time was risky, our priority was to show everyone how committed we were.
Konami’s decision to revive the Silent Hill franchise seems to be working well. Both the remake of Silent Hill 2 by Bloober Team and the new game Silent Hill f from NeoBards have been well-received by critics and are selling well. The analyst pointed out that if players hadn’t believed the series would continue, they likely wouldn’t have been as interested in trying these new installments.
He explained that a series’ long-term potential only becomes clear when a new installment is revealed. Players need to believe a franchise has a future to stay interested, and they’ll match the company’s level of commitment. To truly excite fans, the company needs to demonstrate its dedication—it’s a reasonable expectation, he argued.
Konami has revealed that the remake of Silent Hill 2, released last year, has sold over 2.5 million copies globally. This success has boosted the entire Silent Hill series to over 10 million units sold. The newest game in the series, Silent Hill f, was released last month and has been well-received by horror fans. It was developed by NeoBards and features a story written by Ryukishi07.
Voice actress Konatsu Kato, who voices the main character Hinako Shimizu in Silent Hill f, recently shared her experiences recording the game. She said the process began easily, but became more challenging as she progressed, particularly when recording scenes where she interacted with her own character, leading her to question her performance and the story.
Playing the same character, Hinako, as another actor was incredibly disorienting for me, both on stage and in my own head,” she said. “I often found myself unexpectedly crying, and the more time we spent acting opposite each other, the more confused I became, to the point where I worried about losing my grip on reality.
Three years ago, in 2022, we announced three Silent Hill projects – Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f, and Silent Hill: Townfall. We didn’t want to just reveal one remake and then wait to see how it was received. We wanted to show our commitment with multiple titles right from the start.
