The Star Wars Movie We’ve Been Waiting 7 Years for May Finally Be Happening

For the last few years, Disney+ has been the primary home for Star Wars stories, but Lucasfilm is now shifting its focus back to making movies. Two films, The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter, are scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027. At a recent event, Lucasfilm announced that several other movies are also being developed. While Starfighter is the only film currently confirmed for release, the studio is still planning the future of Star Wars movies. There’s also talk that one previously paused project might be revived.

A new report indicates that the Lando movie, starring Donald Glover, is moving forward with development. The project was initially planned as a TV series but was later changed to a film. There hasn’t been much news about it since it was first announced, but Glover mentioned last year that he envisioned the movie as a really enjoyable experience.

Will Lando Ever Happen?

Star Wars fans are used to hearing about potential movies that never actually get made. Many projects have been announced over the years but ultimately cancelled – Rian Johnson’s planned trilogy is a good example – so it remains to be seen what will happen with Lando Calrissian. Donald Glover first played Lando as a young man in Solo: A Star Wars Story, which unfortunately didn’t do well in theaters. However, Glover’s performance was popular with fans, and many would be excited to see him reprise the role in the future.

Some fans are wondering how a Lando movie fits into Lucasfilm’s future plans for Star Wars. Earlier this year, Kathleen Kennedy announced a strategy focused on standalone films that don’t necessarily need to connect to the existing saga. While Lando is a well-known character from the Skywalker story, a movie about him could still be a separate adventure, similar to Solo, focusing on the criminal side of the galaxy. Kennedy has said she wants to give filmmakers the freedom to create stories they’re passionate about, so if Donald Glover can develop a compelling idea for a Lando movie, the studio is open to making it happen.

Just because Lucasfilm is interested in a Star Wars idea doesn’t mean it will actually get made, as we’ve seen recently. For example, despite positive feedback on a Ben Solo movie idea from Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh, Disney ultimately cancelled it. This means even if Kathleen Kennedy likes Donald Glover’s concept for a Lando series, Disney’s top executives would still need to approve it. Disney CEO Bob Iger has stated that the company released too many Star Wars projects too quickly after buying Lucasfilm. Now, Disney seems to be slowing down production of its major franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, because Disney+ led to an overload of content. While a Lando spin-off could be entertaining, Disney might decide it doesn’t fit with their current plans for the franchise. Following the underperformance of Solo, Disney might now prioritize large-scale events with bigger box office potential over smaller, character-focused stories.

Details about the plot of Starfighter are still secret, but there’s a lot of talk about what might happen. Many believe Jedi will be central to the story, and some think this movie could be the start of a new three-film series. There are also rumors of a special appearance by Rey, potentially to set up future movies. Whether any of this is true remains to be seen, but it seems Lucasfilm isn’t currently focusing on smaller, self-contained Star Wars stories. Instead, the studio appears to be aiming for large-scale, major events to bring Star Wars back to the big screen, especially since they might be making fewer movies overall.
