Life is incredibly difficult for ordinary people in the world of The Boys. Super-powered individuals, known as Supes, exist and often cause destruction, even harming innocent bystanders. While these Supes have advantages, they’re constantly walking on eggshells because of Homelander, Vought’s most powerful creation. He controls everything they do, and anyone who disobeys him doesn’t last long – he’s quick to eliminate any threats.
As Season 5 of The Boys begins, Homelander’s negative impact is undeniable, even for his most devoted followers. This will likely lead to a major conflict where the show’s most powerful characters will try to defeat him. Here are four Supes who are now as strong as Homelander, and one who may ultimately win in the final season.
4) Harper
Season 2 of Gen V focuses on Cipher, the new dean of God U, and his efforts to help students develop their superpowers. However, he seems to have overlooked a particularly powerful student: Harper. Harper describes herself as a “chameleon” because she can temporarily copy anyone’s abilities – for about 30 seconds. She recently demonstrated this by using Emma Meyer’s powers, but she may soon face even bigger challenges.
Harper needs to get close to Homelander to learn his powers and weaknesses, and if she succeeds, she can finally hold him accountable for his terrible actions – he’s capable of doing awful things incredibly quickly. Though trying to understand him might cost Harper a part of herself, her friends will be there to help her recover once the danger has passed.
3) Marie Moreau
Cipher is closely watching Marie Moreau, a young woman with the power to control blood. While most people find this ability disturbing, considering it a manipulation of something natural, Cipher believes Marie is destined to save the world. He created her through Project Odessa and envisions her using her powers for healing instead of harm.
Following her power boost in Gen V Season 2, Marie can now completely stop even the strongest Supes, and potentially even kill them. While she hasn’t crossed that line yet, the harsh realities of her world suggest it’s inevitable. Once Marie abandons her attempts at kindness, she could focus on Homelander—another product of Project Odessa—and play a crucial role in saving the world.
2) Ryan Butcher
As a huge fan of The Boys, it’s wild to see how much everyone – especially the kids in that world – looks up to Homelander and The Seven. They’re basically real-life superheroes doing incredible things, so it makes total sense why they’re so popular. But then you’ve got Ryan Butcher, Homelander’s son, and it’s heartbreaking watching him realize the truth. He’s understandably not ready to accept who his dad really is, and definitely doesn’t want to be used as a weapon in Billy Butcher’s fight.
Taking some time to grow and gain new experiences could help Ryan understand things from different viewpoints. He’s expected to return in Season 5 and confront his father. Ryan has a significant advantage because he possesses the same powers as his dad, and ultimately, Homelander will struggle with the idea of harming his own son.
1) Thomas Godolkin
The latest development comes from Season 2 of Gen V, where it’s revealed that Cipher is secretly controlled by Thomas Godolkin, who has been hidden for decades. He intends to empower Marie to heal the world, but he’s also been using his mind control abilities to kill Supes he deems unworthy.
Godolkin thinks many Supes aren’t deserving of their powers and intends to eliminate those he deems unworthy. He’ll likely discover Homelander’s misdeeds and try to stop him, too. Given how unstable Homelander already is, a confrontation with Godolkin could push him past the breaking point and potentially lead to a new, dominant Supe taking charge.
