The tension in Task comes from the intertwined stories of Tom, an FBI agent, and Robbie (Tom Pelphrey), a local criminal, whose paths are destined to cross. In terms of writing, acting, and overall style, Task feels more aligned with the original True Detective than any of its later seasons.

While True Detective leans towards a more unsettling, supernatural feel, Task focuses on the inner lives and moral failings of its characters.
