Mariska Hargitay isn’t pulling out the cuffs for her kids.

Mariska Hargitay, known for her role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, talked about her fun approach to discipline with her three children: 18-year-old August, 13-year-old Andrew, and 14-year-old Amaya, whom she shares with husband Peter Hermann.

Mariska Hargitay shared on the October 21st episode of the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast that humor has been a lifeline for her. She’s incredibly thankful for it, and even uses playful teasing with her kids. ‘When they misbehave, I call them losers,’ she said, ‘and somehow that makes it okay for them – we end up laughing about it together.’

We playfully tease the kids,” she explained. “I tell them, ‘Don’t do that, because if you do, you’ll look unskilled and unsuccessful. Is that the image you want to project?'”

The 61-year-old shared that her relationship with her husband, Peter, 58, whom she married in 2004, has actually made her family closer and more resilient.

I think that’s why we’re still together,” she said. “Sometimes I get really upset or something happens that frightens me, and I’ll tell my husband, ‘Peter, something doesn’t feel right. I get a tightness in my chest and might need to go to the hospital.’

He instantly launches into being funny, and honestly, it always throws me for a loop. As soon as I start laughing, I immediately wonder if I should be laughing – like, is this a joke, or is something serious happening? It’s a really disarming tactic, and it always keeps me on edge.

For Mariska, finding love—let alone on the set of SVU—was something she never imagined.

She explained that she didn’t marry until she was forty, after dating for two years. Once he proposed, they were married within four months. She doesn’t believe she could have made it work earlier, saying she simply had too much personal growth to experience first.
