With everything going on in the world, comedy is a great way to relax. But lately, good comedies haven’t been showing up in theaters very often. That’s where streaming services come in handy. However, movies released directly on streaming platforms sometimes aren’t very good, or they simply don’t appeal to a wide audience. Comedies, in particular, aren’t considered a safe investment for expensive production and marketing, so they often end up on streaming services where people are already subscribed and can watch them easily. The problem is, with so many comedies available – many starring well-known actors – truly excellent ones can easily get overlooked.
We’re not suggesting these three items were overlooked, and you might have already discovered them. However, if you haven’t, they’re worth checking out. Just so you know, one of them isn’t brand new, but it’s connected to a recent release.
3) Hit Man
Hit Man was a key film in establishing Glen Powell as a leading man, and it truly showcases his talents. The movie lets Powell demonstrate his charm even while playing a somewhat questionable character, and he has fantastic on-screen chemistry with co-star Adria Arjona. Plus, it allows him to prove his versatility through his character’s use of disguises.
Despite featuring a contract killer, Hit Man is a surprisingly light and funny movie. It successfully balances humor with moments of genuine tension, creating a film that’s as versatile and engaging as its main characters.

2) Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Everyone agrees that Planes, Trains and Automobiles is the ultimate Thanksgiving movie. It’s hilarious and surprisingly moving, thanks to the fantastic connection between Steve Martin and John Candy. But it’s also a beautiful film because John Hughes did such a great job directing and writing it.
Many Hughes films haven’t held up over time (like Sixteen Candles and Weird Science), but this one really has. It’s ironic that this R-rated movie is actually more appropriate for kids today than those older PG-rated films. Anyone wanting to understand just how talented and special John Candy was – not only as a comedian, but as a performer and person – should definitely watch it. We’re featuring Planes, Trains and Automobiles because Thanksgiving is approaching, and also because the new documentary John Candy: I Like Me is now streaming on Prime Video. If you plan on watching the documentary, following it up with the movie that inspired its title is a great idea.

1) Deep Cover
Many people may have overlooked the film Deep Cover, which is a real shame. It’s a truly fun and surprisingly funny crime movie.
Even if nothing else, the actors make this movie worth watching. Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom (who plays a surprisingly different kind of role), and Nick Mohammed from Ted Lasso all seem to be genuinely enjoying themselves, along with Paddy Considine as the villain and Ian McShane in a quick appearance. Luckily, the movie also has a clever script, which is impressive since it was written by four different people – usually, that many writers can make things messy, but it works here.
