October is a fantastic time to stream scary movies, and a new one is quickly becoming popular. Over the last few weeks, films like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Bring Her Back have become available for streaming, and Zach Cregger’s Weapons will be added to HBO Max later this month. Fans of horror might spot a recognizable actor from the Harry Potter and Star Wars series in one of these new hits.
Kathryn Hunter, known for her roles as Mrs. Figg in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Eedy Karn in the series Andor, is now starring in the movie Vicious. Released on Paramount+ on October 10th, Vicious quickly became a hit, reaching the Top 10 on the streaming platform. According to FlixPatrol, it’s currently the most popular movie on Paramount+ globally, surpassing films like Top Gun: Maverick, Novocaine, 13 Hours, and Night Hunter which make up the rest of the Top 5. The film is number one in multiple countries and is currently second in the U.S.
In the film Vicious, Hunter plays a mysterious woman who sets off a frightening chain of events. She gives Dakota Fanning’s character, Polly, a strange box and asks her to put three things inside: something she wants, something she dislikes, and something she loves. After doing so, Polly is quickly caught up in a bizarre and unsettling nightmare.
Vicious Is a Streaming Success Despite a 42% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Despite receiving mostly negative reviews from critics, the movie is currently performing very well on streaming platforms. While it features a well-known cast and an experienced horror director, it has a low score of 42% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and only 30% from audiences – making it one of the lowest-rated films in the careers of those involved.
Critics haven’t been kind to Vicious, calling its story confusing and poorly written, its attempts at being frightening cheap, and its conclusion disappointing. Variety said the movie was a dull and aimless experience, lacking any originality. Loud and Clear simply stated that Vicious fails to deliver genuine scares.
Okay, so while the movie Vicious isn’t perfect, honestly, the acting is really strong. Especially Dakota Fanning – she’s incredible! Brian Tallerico at RogerEbert.com said she basically carries the whole film, and it’s a really demanding, emotional role. Other reviewers seemed to agree – she delivers a raw and committed performance that really makes the movie work.
Vicious is now streaming on Paramount+.
