The Rainmaker Is a PVOD Hit Amid Season 2 Uncertainty

USA Network’s new legal drama is proving to be a hit, quickly rising to the top of the charts for on-demand rentals.

According to FlixPatrol, The Rainmaker is currently the most popular show on Amazon’s Top 10 list in the United States. It’s been consistently ranked in the top 10 since October 16th, which is quite remarkable. The legal drama is also performing well in Australia, ranking between fourth and seventh place on Stan’s Top 10 list since October 16th.

The movie The Rainmaker centers around Rudy Baylor, a newly fired lawyer who joins a small, struggling law firm. He takes on a case involving a young man who died under suspicious circumstances in the hospital, and his investigation leads him into a dangerous conspiracy involving his old firm.

The series is based on John Grisham’s 1995 novel and features Milo Callaghan as Rudy Baylor, alongside Lana Parrilla, Madison Iseman, P. J. Byrne, Dan Fogler, Wade Briggs, Robyn Cara, and John Slattery in supporting roles.

Developed by Michael Seitzman and Jason Richman, the series quickly gained popularity after its premiere on USA Network. It also launched on other networks and the Peacock streaming service, helping it reach a large audience. NBCUniversal approved the series in June 2024, following six years of work to adapt John Grisham’s legal thriller for television.

Although The Rainmaker isn’t quite the same as Suits, it shares a similar charm – a story of someone overcoming the odds, which Suits fans will likely appreciate. Both shows follow young lawyers navigating the complexities of their profession. However, while Suits focused on a glamorous, high-powered world, The Rainmaker is more down-to-earth and emphasizes doing what’s right.

The Rainmaker Movie Was An Instant Hit in 1997

The main character, Rudy Baylor, isn’t involved in high-stakes business deals. Instead, he’s battling unfairness at the local level. This gives The Rainmaker a realistic feel, prioritizing emotional impact and moral dilemmas over fancy appearances and clever dialogue. The series also follows the well-known 1997 film adaptation directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

The movie boasted a fantastic cast, including Danny DeVito, Claire Danes, and Jon Voight. This adaptation of The Rainmaker played out as a traditional legal thriller, but with a sleek and somewhat darker tone. When it came out, the film was generally well-received, and it still maintains strong scores today – 82% from critics and 78% from audiences – on Rotten Tomatoes.
