In DC Comics, Darkseid is the Justice League’s greatest enemy – a powerful ruler who wants to control everything and destroy free will. Recent stories, like Absolute Universe and DC K.O., have solidified his place as the ultimate villain, a threat unlike any other. As the DC Universe has developed a long history for its heroes and villains, Darkseid felt like the ideal force to bring all Earth’s protectors together. The end of Peacemaker Season 2 suggested this might happen, introducing a prison planet called Salvation that’s connected to Darkseid’s world in the comics.
James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, has explained that Darkseid won’t be the main villain in the first big story arc of the new DC Universe. This unexpected news means another powerful enemy of the Justice League will likely become the central threat, bringing a different kind of massive danger to challenge these heroes. Now, everyone’s wondering which major villain will step up to be the one who truly tests the Justice League’s strength.
5) Mongul

Mongul is the brutal ruler of Warworld, a planet built for constant battle, and a powerful enough tyrant to go toe-to-toe with Superman. He doesn’t have grand schemes or complex motivations – he simply wants to conquer and control. To entertain himself and his people, Mongul forces the most powerful warriors in the universe to fight in deadly gladiatorial games. This makes him an incredibly dangerous physical opponent, ranking among DC’s strongest villains. As ruler of Warworld, he has access to powerful alien technology that could destroy entire planets, so his arrival anywhere is a serious event. A full-scale invasion by Mongul would be a massive threat, forcing the Justice League to face a seemingly unstoppable army led by a commander who can battle even their strongest heroes to a draw.
4) Amazo

As a lifelong movie and comic book fan, Amazo is a villain who’s always fascinated – and terrified – me. He’s this android created by Professor Ivo, but he’s not just a robot; he copies the powers of anyone with superpowers he meets. Seriously, anyone. Think about it: he can steal Superman’s strength, the Flash’s speed, even a Green Lantern’s ring abilities! What really makes him scary isn’t just the copying, though. Some versions of Amazo actually improve on those powers, fixing any weaknesses and becoming even more powerful. Introducing a character like Amazo into a DC Universe film or series would be a brilliant move because it flips the script. The Justice League’s powers – what usually saves them – become what could defeat them. It’s a fantastic concept that really raises the stakes.
3) Felix Faust

The biggest dangers don’t always come from outer space. Felix Faust is an incredibly powerful sorcerer who has spent centuries searching for ultimate magical power, often by making deals with demons. This constant pursuit of knowledge has made him a frequent enemy of the Justice League. He doesn’t usually rely on physical strength, preferring to use trickery and dark magic to get what he wants. He’s taken control of the Justice League before to steal magical items, and has even sacrificed the souls of others – including his own son – to increase his power. A villain like Faust could bring a truly terrifying side of the DC Universe to life, unleashing demonic forces that would require both incredible strength and magical skill to defeat.
2) Vandal Savage
Vandal Savage is a cruel and incredibly intelligent strategist who has been a threat to humankind for over 50,000 years. Originally a Cro-Magnon warrior named Vandar Adg, he gained immortality and superhuman strength from a strange meteorite. Throughout history, he’s been a conqueror, a king, and a terrifying figure, secretly controlling civilizations and starting conflicts to achieve his goals. Savage is dangerous not only because of his intelligence, but also because of the vast wealth and resources he’s collected over millennia. In a world where powerful companies already hold significant influence, Savage is ideally suited to be the ultimate puppet master. He could be revealed as the hidden force behind many global corporations, using his immense wealth and power to enact a plan for world domination that is far more subtle and deeply ingrained than any invasion from outer space.
1) Black Hand

William Hand, also known as Black Hand, could be a great villain to replace Darkseid in the DC Universe. He started as a small-time enemy of Green Lantern, but became obsessed with death, eventually becoming the human representation of Nekron, the god of death. Black Hand wields the original Black Lantern Power Ring, allowing him to bring the dead back to life and create an endless army of undead Black Lanterns. He famously unleashed this army in the Blackest Night storyline, attacking both heroes and villains by using their emotional connections to those they’ve lost. This story is still considered one of DC’s biggest and most memorable events. Since the Lanterns series will be a major part of the new DCU, introducing Black Hand would be a logical way to establish a powerful, universe-threatening villain. A live-action version of Blackest Night would be truly frightening, forcing heroes to battle resurrected loved ones, friends, and fallen allies in a war against death itself.
